P-51D is a somewhat decent BnZ airplane :-)

As for tactics...come in fast, shoot, go out fast and far, then come around for another. The difficult part of BnZ is setting up your attack at the right angle, but that's something you need to practice and figure out for yourself.

P-47: Boom & Zoom & dive to get away
P-51: Boom & Zoom & rrrrrruuuuun
190d9:Boom & Zoom & shallow climb
109g10:see above + add verticals
P-38: Boom & stay on shallow dive to escape. Zoom only if other cons are way below you.
La7: weee.. boom, zoom, keep loopin'
N1k: Turn & Zoom..'nuff said
Yak: Boom & Zoom & mix 109g10/la7 stuff after that.

that's what I think of them anyway

IMO the best is the P51-D. Close 2nd is the FW 190-D9. Both have adequate gun packages and handle extremely well at high speed. And both can get you out of a tuff spot if you need to put tail between legs and opt for the 'strategic reposition'   AKA run like heck.

Only ever turn em in the vert keep em very fast - with good SA nuthin will touch ya.

The KI-61 is not to bad a the B&Z attacks with its high rate of fire with its cowl mounted 20mm and its wing mounted MGs and realy limited ammo, I have flown it excusively this tour and I found that it can make a great diveing attack on a plane and turn once or climb and loop back 2 or 3 more times then run.  But, there is always a but, U have to be a really acurate shot with it or U will find yourself out of ammo quick and not a victory to your credit.  Contrary to popular belief I am not asian as much as I fly japanese planes.

Definitely either the Fw190D9 or the P-51D.

The Dora has a better top speed (second only to the La7 down low, but better at most other altitudes) and roll rate, and its guns have better damage capability than the guns on the P-51D.

However the P-51D has guns that are easier to hit with, but do less damage, except right at convergence.  And the Dora has a longer WEP time.

Both planes have lots of ammo, and plenty of fuel for long missions.

Basically its a toss up, with the two planes being effectively equal in most situations.

It just comes down to which you prefer to fly.

Kinggonad, the Ki61 as a Boom & Zoom plane? Have you been sniffing the av gas again?

If you are truly doing Boom n Zoom... the P47.  The Dora and the Pony are lacking in the "boom" department.  8 x .50 caliber MG's make the P-47 a fantastic Boom N Zoom platform.  It's smooth handling and great control at high speed sweeten the pot.  The Dora's not-so-great guns make it challenging.  Only 6 .50's on the Pony make it harder to get kills.  Both of those planes are more survivable, since they can run away from anything.  However, if you want to get kills, I'd pick the Jug.  You'll die more because you can't run away as easily, but if you stuck to pure BnZ, the Jug excells.  It has better Boom and as good or better Zoom than both the D9 or the P51.  The Jug can dive too, but it's zoom climb is fantastic from high speed.

If you want an Axis option to the Jug... 190-A8.  Better guns than the Dora certainly, and for one-pass-kill capability certainly better than the P51 as well.

Again, not the most survivable or best all-around planes in the game, but for pure BnZ, the Jug and the A8 are tops in my book.
