No, she was shot down by ground fire as I recall.  It killed her rear gunner and set her Il-2 on fire, she rolled it inverted and bailed but was too low for her chute to open completely and she was badly injured.  The Germans captured her and the Russians were very suspicious of her after she was freed as the NKVD basically considered anybody who was captured a traitor.   That was after flying 260 ground attack missions, probable the most dangerous job for combat aircraft in WWII by a fair margin.  She got her "posthumous" Hero of the Soviet Union reinstated long after the war.  1960s or 1980s I think.

Apparently she's still going strong today...


Looking around, I found out that she was saved in the German prison camp by Georgy Sinyakov, a Russian doctor that apparently did a lot of amazing things for a lot of people:

Ya, some may say I spend a bit of time in them.

I'd love to join the commie Horde in spanking the bloody Hun Fascists but I dont get home from work until after it starts and I only have one Sat. off during the recreation. Otherwise I'd love to join in.

Imagine getting that teletype from Stalin? Im not sure exactly how it impacted IL2 production at that factory but for sure I'll bet it motivated the head manager.
