The pics didn't show any obvious emplacements. Does anyone know if there were any weapons points on the ship other than possibly an anti missile gattling gun system?

Almost nothing :

1 canon de 40mm anti-aérien
4 mitrailleuses de 12.7mm
3 Simbad (short range AA missiles)

the article I read stated the pirates opened fire with AK-47's .. in the dark .. obviously thinking the French Flagship was a merchant ship.

OOPS.

Now .. if I were French ..I would say that was a declaration of war and respond as such.
'Bring all guns to bear'
'Open Fire when ready'
'Cease Fire' (when boats are destroyed)
(zerr weel bee nonn of ziss 'chassing' and running about een ze dark, no?)

Can anyone decode these hand signals that the pirates gave to the French sailors as they approached them??

Plenty to take out some skiffs with idiots in them. Pity they were not in a position to actually use them on the skiffs. I say that only because there are no skiffs or pirates with large holes in them. More the pity.

France is a key member of the EU's naval mission, Operation Atalanta, fighting Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

It has aggressively tracked and caught suspected pirates and handed over at least 22 to Kenya.

An additional 15 suspects were brought to France for prosecution after allegedly seizing boats belonging to French nationals.
Keep this kind of thing up, the pirates might get the message . . .

Or blow them out of the water at the slightest provocation . . . then I think they will get the message.
