Choppy VOX
« on: October 11, 2009, 09:02:06 PM »
My receive audio from other pilots is often choppy, just a few words or fragments of words. On the other hand, my squadmates tell me I sound perfectly normal.

The latency portion of the Net Status display exhibits spikes of up to 1/2 second each time the choppiness is heard. Everything else is normal, no warping, stutters or severe frame rate issues.

My router is set to accept UDP packets through ports 2000 through 5000. My McAffee anti-virus is running, which could be part of the problem, but it has never caused this before.

Any help appreciated.

AH uses ports 2000-6000 Both UDP and TCP.

 :) PROBLEM SOLVED!

I'm posting the solution in case anyone else should run into a similar issue.

I examined the system log of my Netgear router and discovered that the stream of inbound UDP VOX packets was being flagged as a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. As a result, the router firewall was doing its best to stop the "attack" by blocking many of those inbound VOX packets -- the ones that contained the voices of my comrades. That's why the receive audio was choppy while my "transmit" audio (outbound packets) remained undisturbed.

The cure was to check the firewall settings box labeled "DISABLE DoS Protection."

Once I did that, the choppy VOX problem disappeared and I could hear everyone normally.
