IL-10
« on: October 12, 2009, 05:45:13 AM »
I love the IL2 but she needs a bit of a........pick me up. So I thought the PIMP version would be much more fitting. More aerodynamic airframe and alot lighter this bird combines agility with firepower with pure awesomness.

I always thought its max sea level speed was 315 mph.

Thoughts on the IL-10 from a IL-2 driver? The 10 would be faster, more agile, climb better, and like the IL-2 have the 23mm VYa cannon, not the NS-23. The NS-23 was a scaled down 23mm cannon introduced in 1945 to be a better anti-fighter/bomber killer. The 23mm VYa on the IL-10 would be a carbon copy of our IL-2s VYa and would shoot a 198 gram projectile at 905 m/s and was rated to penetrate 25mm of steel armor at 400m. Conceivably our 23mm VYa cannon should be able to defeat any tank in the game. All of them have 25mm, or thinner, sections of top armor.

What the IL-10 would really give you is much better performance. But hardly enough to perk it. It would have the same ord load as the IL-2 and not enough performance to justify perking. Look at the FW-190s. They carry about the same ords, also have big cannon, and a lot better performance then the IL-10 and they all have a 20+ eny.

So the IL-10 would be worthwhile as an all around defender. It would do better against fighters and still have enough punch to mix it up on the ground. And it was there, in squadron strength, and in combat. Both in Europe and in the far east so it passes that test. I think it would be an interesting and worthwhile airplane. Later model IL-10s were armed with 4 NS-23 cannon and saw service in Korea with the Reds. The NS-23 fired a 200 gram AP projectile 610m/s so as a tank buster it wasn't in the same class as the VYa-23. No matter what the NS-37 armed IL-2 will remain the premier tank killer in AH :salute
