Lol, I killed a C-47 doing that while on a gunship mission. And I guess you could argue that the ability to land and drop troops represents the transport part of the plane.

While true, doing this in real life would prove much more difficult than in-game.  I realize this is in-fact, a game, and that there will be differences, but the fact that I can land anywhere I want just as easily as on a runway bugs me...
I'm Sector95 in-game! :-D

Well provided it is on a nice, flat pice of ground, it could be ALMOST as easy. I think part of the problem is that there aren't the minute variations in the ground that flooded patch of ground, or a rock under the soil would create.

bad idea, the C-47's structural limit is so low, they could tear the wings off

J/K, IDK if they would, but if you put enough on then they might.

There SHOULD be restrictions on how troops can drop. AFAIK, no C-47 ever delivered troops into battle by landing. To staging points? Maybe, but not while under fire.

Also, troops should NOT be able to drop when the Goon is looping and rolling all over (I know a lot of guys who will drop their troops in a 90 degree zoom). Goons should have to be flying straight and level to drop.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Tough call Saxman.  5th AF sure flew their goonies with supplies and troops into harms way throughout the fight up the New Guiniea coast.

Yeah, but did they actually LAND in enemy-occupied territory?

Tiny bit off topic but...

The British put 6 Horsa gliders as close as 40 yards from their objective, Pegasus Bridge, in the dark, on D-Day.

I suppose if they considered C-47s and their crew expendable they would have used them as such.

I've got money says the russians would have concidered them expendable.

The U.S. Navy R4D version of the C-47 carried two banks of JATO bottles, mounted nine or ten bottles per bank under the fuselage. Commander 'Trigger' Hawkes fired off the lot when he lifted R4D Que Sera Sera off the ice at the South Pole in order to free the undercarriage and get her rolling. The consort that had orbited overhead during that first, short visit reported that 'there was an explosion of flames, smoke and ice and that bird just took off and flew'. Only damage done was to one of the 'snow-shoe' plates fitted around the mainwheels - and the nerves of all who watched.

 :salute all 'Frozen Flyers' everywhere.

The C-47 gunship didn't appear until the early 1960s, when it was developed to take on the Vietcong. It was codenamed 'Spooky' or 'Puff the Magic Dragon'.

Here is a good story,

I was in a goon at 15k (dont ask why i was up there) and i dove on a con, eneded up compressing, pulled out and made a few more passes on him before i got bored.
