Fix some problems first
« on: September 12, 2001, 05:26:00 PM »
I know that, like all kids, we like to see new toys like Mosquito Fighter/bombers or He-111 bombers, or whatever. But, I'd like to put in a plea to fix some of the annoying little problems with aircraft first. I think the MOST annoying one is the incredible fragility of the IL-2 tail for what was really a very tough aircraft. This same problem plagues the Mosquito on WarBirds just because the designers had this strange idea that wood was somehow much, much more unforgiving to damage than aluminum. Consequently, in WarBirds the mosquito is hardly used because a few pings and it falls apart, totally unrealistic historically. The same goes for the IL-2. This machine was an armored tub designed to shrug off heavy groundfire and make it home. It would not have developed it's reputation with a egg-shell tail like the one in AH.

Other problems?
Apparently the FW-190 engines are very vulnerable from HO attacks, which is not very likely considering many were rotaries which were tougher to kill than in-lines.

Twin engines on the P-38 are often both taken out by a single shot.

These little niggling things continue to annoy.

Alot of what u mentioned Holder is being fixed...

Including the FW and P38 engine problems.  Although!!! one thing to note the FW engine while it may not have radiators etc, it has just as many vulnerable oil, fuel lines etc as any other engine.  About all this translates to is that, there are less critcal systems in an FW than say a spitfire, but a hit to the engine stands just as good a chance of damaging either plane.
A hit to the radiator, is another matter +)
