A-26 Invader
« on: August 23, 2000, 03:06:00 PM »
Good plane for strafing and general ground attack, still a ways away from "Uber".  Over 2000 of these were produced during WWII, and I think it would make a nice addition to the AH planeset.  I was thinking of the late model (WWII) A-26B-66-DL.  This one was made for the PTO.  It's ventral turret was delelted for extra fuel capacity.  This version would be useful for the water terrain that we're supposed to get in 1.05.  There were 14 forward firing .50 cals     .  Please model this HTC!

Specification of Douglas A-26B-60-DL Invader:

Powerplant:
Two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-79 air-cooled radials, each rated at 2000 hp for takeoff, 2350 hp with water injection.

Performance:
Maximum speed 355 mph at 15,000 feet. Cruising speed 284 mph.
An altitude of 10,000 feet could be attained in 8.1 minutes.
Service ceiling 22,100 feet.
Normal range 1400 miles, maximum range 3200 miles.

Dimensions:
Wingspan 70 feet 0 inches, length 50 feet 8 inches, height 18 feet 6 inches, wing area 540 square feet.

Weights:
22,362 pounds empty, 26,000 pounds loaded, 41,800 pounds maximum.

Armament:
Eight forward-firing 0.50-inch machine guns in nose. Three 0.50-inch machine guns mounted in each of the outer wing panels. Two 0.50-inch machine guns in remotely-controlled dorsal turret. Two 0.50-inch machine guns in remotely-controlled ventral turret. An internal bomb load of 4000 pounds could be carried. Maximum total bomb load of 6000 pounds.

Bleh.

Lets lay off the American aircrat requests for awhile and allow some more non-US stuff to be added.  I think we want this to be Aces High, not Americans High.

Which is why I hinted that it should be modeled in 1.05, when we get the ships and stuff.  HTC will have 1.04 Patch 1, 2, 3, and maybe 4 to add some non-US planes.

Already knew you have Odessa in USA but Moscow too ?
Hmph... You guys bought Alaska so why not

About the planes in AH:
My guess is that most of players don't take it too serious what planes HTC is gonna model next (at least I dont).
Just keep 'em coming and I promise I fly everyone of them.

(Yep, XIV too  ).

Yep, I'd prefer the A26 version with the 20mm turret....

BUT, I'd sooner have a Mosquito or Beaufighter (got to keep mentioning them!!).  Beaufighter is perfect for anti-shipping!

Hah, finally some support for my Invader promotional campaign (or maybe yours). Although the 'Americans High' stuff is noted (a hundred times min) I'd still opt for the a-26.
One: it's so beautiful.
Two:it fits right between jabo's and buffs
Three: Yes there are many US planes in AH, as were there in RL
Four: It will be lots and lotsa fun to fly
Five: it's so beautiful

By the way, I definately want the turret modeled, maybe it could be an option like gondolas?

Oh Jeez, if I only had a rearview mirror!

Bies

And bring the A26 and Hurricane (Mk IIC/D) to AH!!!

Some great info on this plane from the USAF Museum:  http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/attack/a4/attack4.htm

Here's a nice shot of a -66-DL

Yes that's 5 rockets and 3 fifties on each wing.  2 more rockets or a 500 lb bomb could be carried in place of the drop tank.  If rockets were deleted, two 500 lb bombs could be carried per wing.

This in addition to the 4000 lb internal bombload and the 10 fifties in the fuselage!

And on a plane that, with water injection, was only marginally slower on the deck than most axis fighters.

Don't forget the C model either.  This carried the same armament except for the nose guns, but had a glass nose with a Norden sight.

The Invader is the kind of plane I love - a big twin with lots of weapons.  I also hope to see Ju 88C-4, Il-10, Ki-102, and other kick bellybutton attack planes in the future.

Rendar don't forget that the dorsal turret was usually locked forward to give 16 forward firing guns.

With the ventral turret removed, you get a bit more speed, and more range due to the extra fuel.  Besides, with all of the turrets, the moron ack-starrers would fin it a perfect platform.  Fast, tough, just make passes over a field...you get my point.

So far HTC have done a good job modeling the visibility and range of motion of gun positions.  So the A-26 gunner will have a very limited field of view and limited traverse.  Basically the guns are only good for a bandit crawling up your 6.

I want both turrents flared over, and no internal ordinance

A-26 has some down right scary gun packages for sure. 8 up front, 6 in the wings, and/or 2 gun wing pods.

It is my all-time favorite plane. If modeled in AH I'd really like the deletion of the lower turrent, or both all togather. (Yanno, true attack plane   ) and limit the internal ordinance to the 100 and 250 pounders.

I drool at the though of this baby   flew it for 5 years in Air Warrior, and I've been in Vader withdrawel

If a plane could carry it in real life with out modification, I want HTC to model it.    If you don't want to carry bombs, just dump them after taking off.

Why not just carry the bombs you wish?  Some people want 500's, some 250's.
On another note, I do want to remove the ventral turret.  This would limit the number of ackstars, and it would extend it's range.
