My prediction is that even if there is no hoax that this family life they have will be scrutinized to death until every lunatic in the country is satisfied that their happiness (if they have any) has been destroyed and every dollar they have is long gone.

Nope.  This kind of crap needs to be squished as aggressively as possible.  It would make people think twice before they pull this kind of stunt again.  As far as the boy "hiding" for 2-3 hours I can attest to young children doing silly things at times.  When my brother got hit by a car I hid under my bed and wouldn't come out because I thought it was my fault, was around 3 or 4 at the time.

I think it was a hoax all the way, but I doubt they'll ever be able to prove it.  Here's the considerations...

1.  He recently submitted a proposal to someone (TLC?) for a reality show, and was turned down.
2.  They were videotaping when the balloon lifted off, and the balloon doesn't appear to be "loaded", ie. nothing appears to be in the box on the bottom.  The adult appears to be in the video too.
3.  The guy is "experienced" in doing stuff like storm chasing, and he should have darn well known that the balloon probably couldn't lift a 30+ lb child and fly off like it did.

As for the sibling's story that he saw the boy crawl into the box before it was released, it has been proven over and over that an adult can quite easily create a reality for a child by simply making assertions.  The child's mind fills in the gaps until the asserted events "feel" like real memories.  Even adults can be convinced to "remember" things that never happened.

My bet - even if it wasn't planned as a set-up from the beginning, once the thing lifted off the father played it for all it was worth.  The balloon doesn't appear to have that much lifting capability and the thing did not appear to be loaded down with any weight at all in the video clip I saw.  The father let the drama unfold until they found the kid, and even "experts" had to assume the worst because by the time any third-party had cameras on the balloon, the empty state of the balloon wouldn't mean anything because the kid could have fallen out earlier.

So I say hoax, with it being nearly impossible to prove and with a big question of when it switched to being a hoax.  It could have been a setup from the beginning, or the Dad could have simply let events unfold even as he knew there was no way the kid could have been inside when it lifted off.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

By calculation the balloon could feasibly lift about 82 lbs and the boy weighs just 37 lbs so it is plausible even at the point at which the balloon was seen to have a sections sagging.

I looked at the vid of the balloon, (I am write tech LTA stuff for money) Helium only lifts about 44 lb per 100 cubic feet. that thing didn't have close to a thousand cubes in it (looks close to 600-750) it had trouble lifting its self. not a chance it could lift more than 33 lb gross weight and the Mylar probably weighed in at 12 to 15 lb....

By what calculation?

I am more in agreement with gunnss. I don't know much about the math but just based on experience and what I've seen in the past there is no way this balloon could lift more than a few pounds.

I will say though that by the time the news helos were filming, it was impossible to really tell its size. Only when it 'landed' and was beside people and vehicles could you tell it was way to small to even lift a dog. However even during the flight it was floating in such a way that it was obvious there was no payload. For example at one point it was on its side and almost going inverted.

The dad *MUST* have known there was no way for it to lift his boy, therefor this is a complete hoax. I hope they see jail time, and I hope their kids get a better shot at life than what they are getting dealt now.
The journey is the destination.

I love how people running on a field at a game gets squashed imediaetly but this crap gets several days of exposure.  I personally want to hand out some noggin thumps to the people that keep this going (media).

The way the story should have ended several days ago is......

Balloon and all materials (even at the house) left over get confiscated.

defax gets called and the normal investigation routine follows.

FAA fines to the maximum allowable amounts.

Media gets fined for every infraction for the days of speculation and mis information.  Remember news is only what has actuallt happened not what might or is being discussed.

They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?
