Mitsu, would you happen to have any J2M2 paint shemes... or were they more or less similar to the J2M3 schemes?

Also did J2M3 carry 100 rouds per gun Type 99-1 and 2 or were the Type 99-2 increased to 120 like late A6M5s?

J2M3 had 2 Type 99-1 20mm Cannon (Short Barrel; 210 Rds. each) and 2 Type 99-2 20mm Cannon (Long Barrel; 190 Rds. each).

There are just so many interesting Japanese aircraft to choose from!

I thought I read somewhere that the J2M Raiden was troublesome and a disappointment, so its production was phased out in favor of the N1K2.   Less than 500 were produced.

I still like it though.   Personally I think its an intriguing aircraft.   It has a very high rate of climb and powerful armament.   Since AH doesn't model engine reliability issues, I don't doubt it would be an effective interceptor!

Oboe, it would seem that there might have been over 600 produced. I believe that the 476 number was the total from the Mitsubishi factory.

J2M1 = 8 (9 less proto No.4 for J2M2 development)
J2M2 =131 +/-
J2M3 =307 +/- (Mitsubishi)
J2M3 =128 (Koza KK)
J2M4 = 2
J2M5 = 43
J2M6 = 2
Grand Total= 621 of all models

Still a small number, however when you factor in that the J2M was used only for home defense of Japan, it surely wasn't meant to be fighting on the front at all.

I would imagine the Japanese didnt consider the US bombing the Home Islands as a possibility at all. J2M might have been phased out in favor of the slower but more manuverable N1K if the B-29 raids didn't start.

The J2M was one of the few (Ki-44 was the other I believe) that was able to reach the height at which the B-29 operated at. So production was reinstated because of the B-29 threat.

I think that the J2M would probably be the only non-perk plane that could effectively bring 4x20mm at 30k+ since the 190s are really medium-low alt planes. Also the insane climbrate of the J2M series (and Ki-44   ;) ) would make it ideal for HQ/Resources defense.

I really do love that neat little plane   :cool:

Silo,

Thanks for the corrections and additional information.   My info was cited in Stewart Wilson's Aircraft of WWII.   You are no doubt correct on Mitsubishi's 476 number.

My source also indicates a small number were sent to the Phillippines in late 1944.  It does seem much more appropriate as a Home Islands defense interceptor though.

Please tell me that 3D model is from HTC and is waiting to be skinned for inclusion in 1.08!   :eek:

Brady, a handful of J2M3 had 4xType 99.
We know them were known J2M3a.

The Type 99-1s ere removed and a gunpod (yeck) conataing the Type 99-2 was fitted on the wing much like early the N1K1-J. As a result the J2M took a performance hit... and I believe these (J2M3a) were discontinued after about 30 or so planes.

Perhaps Mitsu could shed more light on this.

brady,

Most of J2M3s had Type 99-1 and Type 99-2 cannon.
J2M3 couldn't select 4 Type 99-2 Cannon because IJN gave priority of Type99-2 to N1K2-J.

a handful of J2M3a's had 4 Type 99-2 cannon tho.

I have had the Great Pleashure of Handeling both the Type 99 1 & 2. I made arangements with a local Museum(the Oregon Military Museum) to photograph some of their aircraft MG/Cannon collection,the examples they have of these cannons are in Beautifule condition (they look new), they are not all that heavy I easly picked up both cannons(one at a time)and moved thean across the room so I could photograph them,the pictures turned out just ok,I ment to go back and do a better job of it but work intervened, someday :)Their realy is no big diference betwen the 2 the type 99-2 has a longer barel and a bit bigger receaver, they fire the same projectile, just a bit bigger shell case on the type 2.
  It was a good day :)

  If i were home I would post a pic :)I will try to do it for u all to see in a weak or 2 when i finish my curent prodgect.
