GeForce 8800GT?

I'm looking at the possibility of replacing my 9500GT for a better video card but I don't want to spend $100+ on one. I've found a PNY GeForce 8800GT 512MB for a reasonable price... but the question I now have is:

A. Is the performance of the 8800GT going to be good enough for AH with all features (no shadows) on without stuttering or WSOD?
B. Can I get a much better performing PCI-E 2.0 video card for under $100?
C. Would I be better off looking at ATI rather than Nvidia?


I've seen people have issues with what should be really good video cards, but only those with the highest end models appear to be totally trouble free...and I'm not wasting $200-$300 on a video card for a hobby.

I use an 8800GTS KO with all settings maxed.  Depending on the clock speed, it should be able to do the same.   Make sure you have a 500W + Power Supply though.

Neither stuttering or WSOD is casued by the video card. A single 8800 GT on Vista can give smooth video playback even with shadows on but you will have to have processes trimmed to a minimum and if you approacha busy field (lots of cons fires and smoke) the frame rates could drop a bit. If you do your work in minimizing processes the video should playback smoothly.

The sweet card right now (best bang/buck) IMO is the 9800 GTX but it will be a little more than $100.

Wouldn't be opposed to it if this deal on the 8800GT falls through...thanks for the heads up on that.

Using an 8800GT myself and it works great, I can't speak much for stock performance as I have mine over-clocked to 725/1812/1090. At those speeds though I run the game maxed except for having soft shadows on. There pretty vintage anymore but if you can get a nice price on it there a great card and over-clock very easily.

i have the 9800gtx+ got it for 120 at best buy.( they priced match to new egg and it was on sale there).  have no problems with game running everything on.

I have 8800 GT no problems running AH, mine has the G92 processor in it. From some reading i did ( I could be wrong) the later model 8800 had the same processor as the 9800. The older 8800 had the G80 chipset. Hence when I bought my card the 9800 was a souped up 8800.
They may have made performance chages in the 9800 since I bought my card.

the latest version of the 9800gtx only needs 1 6 pin connector the older model needed 2.

Well the deal on the 8800GT fell through...price went too high...now I have to start looking at something else.

I should probably bite the bullet and buy big...just irks me to do it.

I'm thinking 9800GTX...should carry me for a couple of years.

Considered it but I'm running an Nforce mobo and something in the back of my mind tells me to stick with Nvidia chipsets on this thing...if I had an AMD or Intel board I wouldn't have any hesitation.

Anyone running a newer ATI video card on an Nforce mobo?

Yeah I've been looking at the specs and had my eye on couple of cards on ebay but they got snatched up before I could put a bid on them. When you can find them brand new they are still getting over $125...  :uhoh

you can get a 9800 from newegg for 100 and I am sure there has to be other online retailers that are just as competetive. Awhile back there was a speacial for $75 for a 9800, of course that does no good now.

Yes the (only) 9800 GTX available at newegg ($109) is the same PNY version listed at Best Buy ($169).
