just got Hearts of Iron 3
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:11:42 PM »
If anyone here got really sucked into moving counters around a map in the old board war games (yes, .. I did)
…oh my is this one a treat.

Like Avalon Hill’’s ‘Eastern Front’ of long ago ..this one is even more epic in scale.
You literally can control everything ..or give it to the AI and just run what you want, and switch the AI on and off if you want to do something like declare war on Romania ..they were so asking for it!

Division level, can combine brigades any way you like to make up to 4 brigades into a Division or run a brigade seperately
Same with Squadrons ..can operate separately or as an Air Wing
Yes … I got very much into it, running Germany from 1936 up thru the battle for Poland (so far)

Scrapped navy waste of time, focused entirely on production-infantry-armor-single and twin tactical air force in that order.
Jet engine development I began in 1936 –evil grin- ..ima have me some 262’s as soon as possible.

Can choose division level commanders by abilities ..ie: don’t have a Panzer Leader running your infantry division
The AI does failry well at matching them up if you don’t want to make sure Rommel is runnin a tank division

I will be into this awhile .. even WoW has been stuffed into a closet for a bit :)

I have Hearts of Iron 2.

Fun game, very addictive.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I enjoy HOI 2 more, but both are very good in their own right.

Original HOI allowed for some crazy technology scenarios.

I own this as well, and with germany I created a naval super power once:

5 SH Battleships (Berlin, Dresden, Bitburg, Hamburg and Munich) Account for 8 Capital kills, 3 of which being carriers (all British) and 3 BB's, and 2 Heavy cruisers.

4 Battleships (Bismark, Tirpitz, Freidriech der Grobe, Erich Raeder) All ships combined account for 9 capital kills ( 2 carriers, 2 BB's, a BC (Dunkerque), and 4 heavy cruisers.

9 Battlecruisers (Scharnhorst being my top killer in the entire navy, with 4 Capital ships and 9 escorts claimed to its name

6 Heavy Cruisers (Use as support to the SH BB)

21 Light Cruisers (7 have sunk so far, but i rebuild a ship in its place as soon as I lose one)

15 Destroyers (4 of which i"ve lost, but rebuilt)

16 U-boats (XXI class mostly, with a few VII class as well, I have electric torpedo's researched) :)

4 Transports (for ferrying around those important marines for naval landings)

I also researched all infantry techs to 1942 by 1938 and pretty much rolled over poland in a few days, and let the italians break the southern line of france, where I then made my move. My navy now rolls almost unoposed through the channel and the coast of england, with minimal air attacks.

I also allied Hungary with myself early so taking Poland was easier, but before poland surrendered, Romania was inducted into the allies, and the hungarians were having some issues, so i sent 2 corps to assist. The line is pretty much holding now at the romanian city of cluj, as the british and some remaining french have reinforced the romanian line there. I am attenpting to get Bulgari into the axis but my threat level is barely making them move. Declaring war agaist the soviets is suicide at the moment so i won't bother, but all in all that was a fun game. I halted it in mid 1944 where it was almost unplayable due to lag.

I can't play HOI3 by 1941, it's way too slow. A single day on average takes a minute. I can read a book while waiting for a year to pass.

Yes but you need an IP address of an actual server to do it as far as I know.

One of the best games ever.

I suggest getting the "Stoney Road to War" mod.

Love it.

yes .. lag starts becoming an issue in no time.

Natures way of sayin I need more PC :)

Like mebbe a Falcon MachV or some such!!

I love buildin the *cvrap* outta my infantry-armor and just driving wherever I want to ..none o' this namby pamby that hitler did.
20 panzer divisions spearhead into warsaw ..and ya .. coupla days and its over .. I love how you can jam 5 brigades into a division with a lil research :)

I use 4 armor w/1 motorised for the combined arms bonus, and 4 inf w/1 arty for average divisions ..have some tailored just for smashin soft targets en-masse tho ..
1 inf, 4 arty .. way evil :)

Looks pretty cool...but I can see where it would start using up some heavy system resources...and take days to get much done, truly not for those who need instant gratification. I might have to try it out.

But for massive battlefield fun...nothing beats Total War Rome...need a good system to have 4 to 6 large armies clashing on the battlefield.

v1.3 finally fixed this issue and it's been smooth.
