speaking of Naval battles are there any good WWII naval battle sims?

There use to be a series called 'Great Naval battles'.  I use to have a copy of 'Great Naval battles IV', it was buggy as hell but fun to play..

Not really. It's all gone to arcade. Though, I love the concept of Pacific Storm allies, but it's prone to chronic crash sooner or later (too soon, unplayable) and that'll mark the end of a campaign. Makes me really hate those who left it unfinished.

If I'd make a game, I would most definitely rob some aspects of PS:A. I only lack the skills to do 3D stuff, but in due time I'm sure I could get a game with 2D interface up and running. I would like to make a naval game, which actually is quite surprising, since I've never been much of a navy buff when compared to air and land.

If you like to throw away a year of your life and like micromanaging, you should play War in the Pacific.
Then there's also Carriers at War, but I haven't tried it.

'suggested reading' = any WW2 history .. if you avoid the glaring errors you can really have a lot of fun :)

I had Arado's and 262's flyin in '42 when I invaded England .. just evil :)

I scrapped my subs right off and focused on Super Heavy battlewagons and screens for a game .. owned the channel in 1941.
Had my first 5 full size carriers on the ways scheduled to launch in early '45

I am still very sucked in, lot to learn about how things work yet.
(ie: just discovered I should watch my number of officers being built every day, because I can scale them back when I reach 100 percent and do more research .. LOL .. I hate to see how many I had loafin around in earlier games I played where I just set it at 100 per day and left it there .. !!

Download the Samurai Spirit mod and read the forum for bugs to avoid. Completing a campaign is rarely a problem, but sometimes you have to go back a save game or two.

I need to see about that. I would really love to play the game through a campaign instead of crashing before it even really begins. No other game has made me so mad and sad for not being able to play, it feels like I'm missing a great game experience due to an unfinished development of an otherwise promising product.

It would be interesting to know what in the forums I should pay attention to. There isn't any obvious "steps to make your game playable" thread. Last time I did read "the forums", if it was the right one, but still found situations that I could not resolve by going back a save or two - everytime a certain unit crossed paths with me, the crap happened.

The SS mod disables certain functions that are problematic, and fixes a few bugs. You'll obviously need the latest patch. Read the support forum to learn about fixes and workarounds. The bug that used to get me was when I had sunk a carrier: If I saved the game before all the aircraft attached to the carrier had been destroyed/crashed from fuel starvation the save game, and all subsequent save games would be corrupted. That was a real problem since auto-save was on by default. SS disables the auto-save by default. There are lots of small bugs like that, but most are avoidable or can be worked around.

I've been playing Navy Field on an off for many years now.  (Started back in early 2005)  While a fun game, I'm not sure how accurate I would call it.  Some of the super-level crews can fire at such speed and accuracy that it's absurd.  It's a fun game, but for realism I'd look elsewhere.

Thanks, that's something I hadn't passed by. That must be the bug that got me every time. Of course autosave was disabled, but the manual saves must've got me.

What BS...  A program crashing because it's saving data to a disk, the developers should be hanging their head in shame.  It's even worse if the player base can easily reproduce it and the Dev's don't have it fixed within a week...  total crap, I don't even own the game and the thought of that pisses me off...  Lazy bastards...

That's been the story of plenty of games I have bought in the past. Silent Hunter II & III had to have been the worst ever.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Game is no longer in development. Publisher can't afford to pay the developer to fix it. Developer has moved on to other projects to put food on the table. The modding community has fixed a lot of the bugs on their own.

I don' think themselves were too eager to publish a game barely on its beta stage. I think the publisher pulled the plug when the game got bad reviews and developers couldn't patch it up fast enough. Releasing the game way too prematurely was a fatal error. Probably so fatal, that even a game to be the best game of a decade would have been doomed (no, PS:A didn't have that potential). It was so badly messed up release. Though, a gutless head of the developers must be to blame as well - a developer should have the guts to tell the publisher that no way in hell is the game ready for release and refuse from making a fatal error. Surely there can't be any financial benefit from releasing a game that barely loads up.
