surprised nobody asked about the " new damage system"
« on: October 19, 2009, 06:28:58 PM »

Astounded I didnt see anyone asking about this. So giddy over the WWI planes nobody noticed?

From the AH front page

They will be the first planes to use a new damage system with greatly expanded capability.

New damage system? Expanded capability??

Some elaboration please.

Would love an in depth overview from one of the HTC staff about this subject.

My guess would be if you shoot holes in the canvas it would increase drag and decrease lift and allowing for the canvas to tear off over time.

From what I gathered at the Con.  Currently there are 64 damage areas on the planes in AH, they are going to making the damage areas expanded to much more then 64, meaning if you get a 50cal shot to your aileron and its just a single shot, you may not lose the whole use of the aileron but it will be some what diminished.  Hope I stated this correctly.

What's wrong with the current damage system?

I don't know enough about the damage model to ask.

Nothing... but I can see how degraded performance would need to have a more detailed damage list.

I remember in Red Baron 3D online, you could shoot a Fokker D.VII and damage it's upper center part of the wing... it would just like crumple up a little (for an image) lol, and then the D.VII became what everyone called "uber" and it would just kinda take off on you and out turn you... So you had to get good at defending yourself or shooting them in the wingtips. I don't recall any of these sorts of issues in the WW2 Aces High and hope to not have them. But it seems HTCs model is beyond Sierra's... so I imagine they are making it so you see fabric rip off and you see wood and smaller pieces get hit and whatnot. Plus thier guns werent very big or effective. I hope its awesome!

its probably going to resemble the damage model on rise of flight. Things like how you handle your ww1 plane can damage it. If you dive you can rip your wings off. And yes hopefully damage from MG rounds will have an effect on flight characteristics.

I think that it should include modelling damage to the pilot relief tube.

I feel sorry for SAPP if their blenders take a hit.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
