How do you turn screen resolution down?
« on: October 20, 2009, 06:06:07 PM »
Sometimes my frame rates go way down due to lotz of planes Ships, or big furballs in close.

Is there a way to turn down the resolution to keep frame rates higher?

Thanks  :salute

When you first start Aces High there is an option labeled "Video Settings".  Click that then select the resolution you want under "Video Resolution".

I believe that would be shift F1 through F4 with:
Shift F1 full vis mode
Shift F2 medium vis mode
Shift F3 short vis mode
Shift F4 ground vis mode

They basically reduce the terrain displayed and control what ground terrain you see from certain altitudes.
You may have to keymap the shift F4 mode. This mode is mainly used when in a vehicle.
Your system will reply with a text response indicating which mode you are in.

Note- while this does NOT turn screen resolution down it does help keep frame rates up if needed.

To change video resolution, go into your "settings" folder and look for a file named "video8.cfg".

Use "Notepad" or some other simple text editor to edit that file. You will find two lines near the top that look like this:

1024,Width
768,Height

Those lines determine the resolution at which Aces High will try to run.

Edit those lines. For example, if you want to run at 800x600 resolution, change them to:

800,Width
600,Height

On older hardware, I sometimes run as low as 640x480. It's hard to read some of the instruments and I have to expand the clipboard a lot, but the framerate reward can be substantial.

I always discourage direct editing of config files - even if they are just text files.  HTC gave us control via the video settings as described a few replies ago...it's best to use the interface that the designers gave us.

Note that sometimes you'll incur a relative loss of performance when running a game at a different resolution than your desktop. It depends on the system.
