Neat visual effect for WWI arena/planes
« on: October 21, 2009, 11:37:15 PM »
Okay, at the very close ranges at which WWI will be carried out, I think it would be kind of neat if the "head" of the 3D pilot visibly tracked with the hat switch...I.E, you are looking left at the bandit, you see his head swivel right and look right into his goggles...I think it would really add to the immersion and be kind of cool. Kind of like being able to see control surface movements.
"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

Yep, would be cool. Also, it would be great that when the pilot dies, the plane wouldn't simply explode but would just start to fall without the icon like when you bail out. Could be applied to the WWII-side aswell. I think WarBirds had this back in the day.

I know the WWI plane dogfights will be much slower and much closer but I would still guess you very rarely be close enough to actually see the head and see the face, both of which you probably wouldn't care about for more than .0002 seconds.

Not to mention being on someone's six and just seeing their head sitting backwards on their body watching you... creepy.  :O

WB (at least in my day) had the grayed-out icon. Dead plane would continue to fall until either it crashed or the pilot logged/respawned.
Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Yep, that's what I was remembering. Would be nice to see something to that effect here too.

Great Idea!!!  Blood streaming back from the cockpit after PW would be cool too!!  And how about flame gushing up from behind the instument panel, (being as the gas tank was usually right in front of your feet) and you can hear yourself shreeking in agony as you burn to death... :t     Cockpits were like a chimney for fuel fires!!!

That's one of the eye candy things I like in RoF.  It's cool to fly up along side someone else and then see their pilot's head turn in your direction.  In one of the few online forays into RoF, I flew along side my wingman and watched him turn his head in my direction and flip me off.

Also they could make it so when you shoot the pilot in the head you can see a large puff of red.

Of course if you fly through the "red mist"...your wind screen/goggles should be partially obscured by a red haze....

Parachutes were used late in the war. For example, Udet bailed out succesfully.

Hmmm, no parachutes, no radios, no trims, no autopilot, no throttle (on some), no armor, no selfsealing tanks, limited ammo, guns that have firing patterns like an unchoked shotgun, no suspension on landing gear for most (bungy cords maybe), wings that vibrate and rip off in flight, highly unstable natures of the most maneuverable planes, not enough speed to run.... And a high likelyhood of flaming death, "What are we waiting for?"

Add to that, VERY close combat ranges, slow speeds, and sweet pilot animation!!!

WoooHoooo, this is gonna be fun!!!
