Banker, to a cop..

Remember when I was talking about being fired, well I was thinking about joining my local police department.

Any of ya'll been police officers? Any advice?

I want to be come one because I need something new in my life and something where everyday is a new thing and not the same ol same ol.

That a bit of a big swing, isn't it? Keep in mind that law enforcement requires much more work than you'd figure, especially physically. But, honestly, I'm generalizing because bank tellers tend not to be buff. Just saying. :)

What brought you to that conclusion of "Dont want to"?

Are you not physically able?
Lack of Motivation?

Is it the fear of the unknown of death, combat? 

Being a police officer is very similar to being in the military, this is why I asked.

Military duty would help get you into a police force...almost anywhere...just from what you've posted, police work isn't your thing.

I can respect that.  That's certainly something you would have to deal with depending on which service you chose.  Each service has its advantages and disadvantages, but you can ask opinions of each service and you will get different answers.  Each offers unique life changing experiences that you will hold dearly for the rest of your life.

Being married with children is one of hardest things for me to do deploying for extended periods, I have been fortunate to have a wife that can function to keep the family on auto pilot during my absents.  A strong marriage and a strong wife is necessary for keeping your mind at ease while away or at least beneficial for you.

Join the Coast Guard then. You can do law enforcement, plus get all the benefits of being in the military, and even if and when you deploy, your not gone all that long. Longest deployment I ever made during my career was 4 months, and that was over to the Med and it was a BLAST!!!!

Before making the leap, go down to your local PD or Sheriffs office and see if they offer a reserve program. This way you can get a taste of police work and see if you like it or not. I spent 11 years with the local sheriffs office as a reserve deputy before moving out of the area and enjoyed it for the most part. My original plan was to go full time but decided against it since I was making more money where I was at.

If your only interest in being a LEO is because you just "think" you might like it, forget it. It's something you have to really want to do as it is a killer for your social life and a definite downer on married life. Yep you do not get deployed but LEO is a 24 hour job. You get odd ball shifts and usually weekends in the middle of the week. That doesn't help the marriage if the wife has a "normal" work schedule. Being a LEO also is not just a casual "job", it gets into every aspect of your life and is not something you just leave in the locker at work. It tends to be the main focus and forces other parts of your life to revolve around the job.

If this is not something you have a real desire to serve with, look at something else, seriously.

You could also do the Reserves or National Guard. you'd only have to serve 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year for training. And they will try to assign you to the unit closest to where you currently live, and they wont reassign u. plus tons of benefits; discounted shopping at PX, free space A travel on military aircraft, enlistment bonus, plus you could be a civilian cop the rest of the month and continue ur regular life exept for that 1 weekend.

The Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps have a Reserve Componet and the Army and Air Force also have there own National Guard units too.

at Ellington AFB there is a Air National Guard unit, The 147th Reconnaissance Wing -
