Pet Adoption & Fostering a Pet
« on: October 24, 2009, 01:46:34 PM »
We have added a new addition to our household.  She's is a 1 year to 18 month Malamute mix.  We have named her Nika.  Nika was placed at a "kill" shelter, meaning that if she was not adopted by a certain time and the space was needed for another dog she would be put down.  While returning home from the Con, Mrs. Death received a call about a dog that would be put down on Monday if she was not adopted or fostered.  We agreed to foster her until she was well trained and we are able to find a suitable home for her (If Mrs. Death and I do not decide to add her to our 4 pets already).  She is a very loving and somewhat trained dog. (pics below)

The reason for this post mostly is to ask, if you have a pet, please have them spayed or neutered and be a responsible pet owner.  If you cannot afford the cost of this, the SPCA and most Humane Societies will issue a reduced cost voucher for this simple operation to be done by the shelter Vet.  If you find yourself in a position that you cannot afford your pet, please network for someone to adopt him or her.  If you are forced to bring your pet to a shelter, please choose a "no kill" shelter.

If you have room in both your home and heart, please consider fostering a dog or cat.  We have found this very rewarding.  Volunteering at a local shelter is a huge help to the animals, shelter and we have found great for the kids to learn to give to the community while doing something they enjoy, being with animals.

Thanks

TD  :salute

I adabted a dog that ran away from home some 9 years back. She actually just started chasing me at my fieldwork and has not left me since! 9 Years. She is not my dog, I am her farmer!
Anyway, she's a good one, and follows me still like my own shadow....along with her daughter.
And a twist of fate. Her previous master moved out of the country some short time after she left him. Now he is staying in our guesthouse ... as a tourist. He knew her right away (well, he knew). He thinks she does not know him, but I can tell that she easily does.
Wonderful creatures, and good luck with her TilDeath.
Malamute I do not know, but looks like a little Husky in there.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

After I had my lab put down 4 years ago I didn't know if I could handle another pet (he was a pound puppy, 100 lb black that a breeder dumped because his couldn't get papers, he wasn't pure black).  About 1 1/2 years later someone tossed an orange kitten out of their car window at work. I was taking him to the Humane Society Shelter but had to stop at home first. He's still here.  14lbs of tan with tan stripes and he acts like a dog. Follows me and begs for treats.  The kids wanted another cat. I checked the shelters but couldn't find one I really liked.  A friend of the family told my wife her cat had gotten out and as fact had it, she had 5 kittens.  My wife has always wanted a grey cat.  We liked a greyish longhaired tabby kitten as well as a slate grey shorthair.  Guess how many I brought home....yep both of em.  Two female kittens that my adult male has adopted as "mommy".  I never would have imagined a male cat would let kittens "nurse". It only lasted a few weeks but it was very odd and funny.  But thats 2 kittens that aren't going to the shelter or worse.  The get spayed and declawed in February.

Nice looking dog. Seems to easily tolerate children.
Looks like a keeper to me.

If you dont have the extra room. Get rid of one of the kids.

I recently added another Keeshond to my household, he is a rescue from the SPCA and is a fantastic pet.  Very gentle, loves to be petted was housebroken when I got him.  He just required a little touch up on some basic rules.  I would recommend a rescue (it will be neutered before you pick it up normally) if not SPCA will give you an allowance to have it done.  I used PETFINDER.com to locate Cody.  He was shown as a Keeshond but is on the large size and is probably a Wolfspitz.

That's a beautiful dog TD.  We have adopted 2 into our household, the first one was Max a Rat Terrier/Feist mix that my sister-in-law was trying to find a home for her husband's sister who couldn't take care of the puppies.  He was 6 weeks old and you could hold him easily in the palm of your hand.

This is Max last Christmas when he was about 13 months old playing with one of his new toys.

The second one we adopted earlier this year in April.  His name is Milo and right now he's a 7 month old Siberian Husky that looks a lot like Nika that TD is finding a home for.  The owner of the puppies had I think 7 of him that he was going to kill until the girl we got him from rescued all of them.  Milo was the last one left when we checked on him and my wife loved him.  We had talked about getting a Siberian before we got Max and I would have loved to have one with blue eyes, but his are black and I love him either way.  He's somewhere around 35 - 40 pounds by now and keeps getting bigger.  Most of these were taken the day he came home from the vet after being neutered.

Max and Milo on the sofa.

Most people laugh at the two of them together because they don't look like they would be good friends at all with Max being so little and hyper most of the time and Milo being so big and pretty relaxed.  However, they are great friends who love playing together and picking on each other.  Just try separating them to give one a bath or something and you'll see.  Milo will howl non-stop until he sees Max and then goes nuts trying to get to him.  Max barks like a demon dog until he has his "little" brother to play with again.

We had Max neutered primarily at first in hopes to calm him down some and for his health benefits.  With Milo it was part of the adoption agreement but we were going to do it anyway.  I hope you keep Nika TD and if we had room for one more I'd definitely think about it.

It mind boggles me how many people are irresponsible with pets of all kinds.  I understand the owner in tough financial times have to give up animals in some of the stupidest ways.  My parents help run a small animal shelter for a small county in Northern Wisconsin.  I went to visit them over this last week.  Was told about a story that a person went into a local thrift store asking if they could leave a few kittens there for sale.  Of course the clerk said no and later upon closing found that the person had stuff the kittens in the trash bin behind the store.  It's stories like these are can bring so much anger to you, often enough they're not followed up by a rescue story.

Animals can touch your life in so many ways.  People who disrespect their value to society are some of the lowest of the low.
