Are they destined to remain so lacking in detail on many fighters and bombers? Is reworking of planes interior just not worth it? With the many upgrades in game,how could or would such a task be attempted.
A6m2 to Yak 9T in between are another 21 single seat fighter and bomber.

The cockpit/gun positions on the aircraft are part of the overall model. When an aircraft is "done/redone to AHII standards," it gets a new cockpit, ala the Spitfires, F4Us, B24s, P47s, B17s, Typhoon, Me262...

Just a matter of waiting until your favorite planes are revamped.

From looking at them and understanding how the game modelling works, and having previously used the Aces High Model Viewer. :)

Like asking a plumber for references on how he knows pipes carry water. I mean, I could always be wrong, but it would be strange if they used separate models.

Nope, they are part of the model.   As you get further away the detailed cockpit is replaced by a flat texture, but both cockpits are part of the aircraft model.

Just wanting to be clear here, are you a model designer for AH or have done any model designing?

I know a couple, and I believe the art package for the cockpits is a whole seperate animal.

Art package, maybe, by the polygons it resides on are part of the whole. At least, that's the way I was taught to do it.

Sure, they could "re-skin" the cockpit, but it'd look just about as gnarly.

As you get further away in what view? (i.e. interior or exterior)

All interior and exterior dictate is where the starting point of the camera is and how it responds to the snap views.

It's called LoD, or Level of Detail. Doesn't matter what view mode you're in, though it's only achievable via the external view in most cases. The model gets slowly less detailed as you move further from it.

Other sims reskin the cockpits all the time as an upgrade without changing anything on the outer skin or AC model. I'm not picking nits here , just trying to get an informed answer as I'm curious about this as well.

Thats pretty common knowledge and can be applied toany view of the model. I'm wondering if cockpit art is seperate from the actual model art package , just as the OP .
