P-63 KingCobra.. We need this plane..and HOW!!
« on: March 14, 2001, 04:24:00 PM »
Hail all,
I was looking through some aviation books and saw the P-39(my personnal favorite) and then the P-63.. read the specs on it and DAMM that was a kick$%#! airplane. Read some more on it and this is why HTC should REAALLY consider this one.

Only mid-egine fighter ever used(as far as I know)

410mph topspeed and cruise speed of 378!! wow.

Carries a 37mm with 4 50s and was heavily armoured

Was a kickbutt tank killer AND fighter in one nice packadge.

ONE OF THE COOLEST REASONS WHY IS!!!  THe Free French forces USED IT!! We could have a fighter with French markings.  WOULD BE A GREAT way to honor the French that fought and died along side the allies.  OR we could put it in Soviet Markings also!!

What due you all think???
PYRO?? HiTech??

Ok I can respect everyone's right to want their dream planes. No matter how cool they may be and this one is a cool one . But we have so freaking much US stuff right now I think maybe it is time for Japan and Italy to have a turn at new planes, Even Russia is more deserving of a new toy than The US.

Brady,
I agree about the US and the P-63 was a cool plane.  HOWEVER, the P-63 never saw action in WWII with the US. Hince forth the FRENCH.. French are never modeled if ever in a WWII flight sim.  Yes it is US based design but HEY, C'est la vie.  Plus we could have a variant for the French and another for the Russians.

OK , I see your point but would not the French rather have an Indigenous design?

Also their are way more Russian designs that should be in hear like the IL-2 for example.

On one of the IL-2 (the game) boards I seem to recall it is mentioned that the P-63 in the VVS didn't go in frontline use before the one week parade offensive against the Japanese in Manchuria.

There were several other besides the P-39 and P-63.

The Koolhoven F.K.55, Fisher P-75, Piaggio P.119 and Bell's other oddball, the XFL-1 Airabonita.

Understand that this is a cruise speed that is not going to be utilized in normal service. Maximum cruise speed is defined as the maximum continuous power setting that can be maintained without eventual damage to the engine. Normal cuise settings for the P-63A were closer to 240 mph. To obtain max range, you can expect cruise settings producing speeds below 200 mph.

The 37mm cannon was not an especially good weapon. It's muzzle velocity wasn't very high and the reliability was never good, with feed jams being very commonplace. 58 rounds filled the magazines, nearly double that of the P-39 (30 rnds). Contray to the commonly accepted belief, the P-39 and P-63 were not frequently used by the Soviets to attack ground targets. By and large, these fighters were deployed in the air superiority role over the battlefield. Armor protection was no better than any other U.S. fighter of this generation.

The 37mm wasn't of much value against tanks. It simply did not have the moxy to penetrate the topside armor and could do little more than superficial damage to most tanks, even with AP ammo.

Considering how many P-39s and P-63s were transferred to the Soviets, I must believe that one or both will turn up in AH at ome future date.

Widewing,

Thanks for your input, the planes your listed.. well I have heard about the XFL-1 Airabonita but the others I have not see or heard, would like to read up on those. Can you suggest any references.

As for the 37mm, the US version stunk and was prone to breakdown. That is why when the russians got there hands on it they removed the 37mm and put there's in or put in a 20mm or 23mm.  23mm was more rare though to see in this plane.

Etherway, My wife, from St. Petersburg Russia,  her grandfather piloted P39s in the war and with the 37mm(their version) it ripped through German armour.  I met him once before he passed away, never seen a old man's eyes light up when a Capitalist pig like myself asked him about his career, they would hit the tanks from the rear or from a top down angle were armour is its weakest.. next to the underbelly of the tank.

Anyway, I would like to see the P39..eventually.. but the P-63 I would like to see in French markings or Russian.

Well they have to model the P-39 eventually.  And when they do, a Free French or VVS P-63 would be a great perk version.

I've long been a proponent for a P-63 Kingcobra !

But I think I would like to see it in 1.08, I think we need to fill out the Japanese planeset alot, and the Russian attack planes or bombers for 1.07

Early P-63 had the same M4 37mm gun as the P-39, with 30 rounds.  The P-63A-9 onwards had the M10 with 58 rounds and a slightly higher rate of fire (170rpm v 140).  Both fired the same ammo, only capable of penetrating 25mm armour, max.

The M4 was unreliable originally because the fired cases kept jamming in the ejector chute.  Once that was identified, the chute was modified and AFAIK there was no particular problem after that.

I had not heard that the Soviets regunned their aircraft; all the accounts and pictures I have seen describe the US 37mm.  The Soviet NS-37 was far more powerful than the M4.  The British did fit a 20mm Hispano, but made little use of the plane.
