Okies... wasnt the p-39 in the pacific theater at the beginning of the U.S's entry into the war. I also thought that the p39 was a plane the Zero had for lunch along with our P-40's... ?

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

Yes.. the P39s were the ones that the zeros would like to hit on eat for lunch... if they could catch them.  And the P39 was first put into the european theatre, classified as the P-400. Brits didn't like it so go shuved over ot the Pacific. Uncle flew P39 with the 30th Pursuit Squadron.. think that is right.  Have to go ask again.

Zeros only had P-39s for lunch above 10,000 ft. Unfortunately, most of the combat (high alt Betty raids with Zero escort on Port Moresby or Guadalcanal) was well above 10,000 feet.

Below that it was far more even.

And as long as the P-40s had competent pilots, as is true of Wildcats, Zeros did not have them for lunch. The P-40 has many exploitable advantages over the Zero that can be made use of in combat.

The overwhelming factor in Japanese air success from Dec. 41 through 42, when they had it, was superior pilot skill, not the Zero.

Had the Dutch and British Brewster Buffalo pilots had the same experience and level of training as the IJN/IJA pilots in the early war, I suspect they may have been able to keep the relative kill ratios fairly close.
