Small Potatoes: Who killed the USFL?

Not sure if there are many of you who remember the USFL, but ESPN is showing 30 for 30 celebrating their 30 years. It's a collection of documentaries, one for each year. The year 1983 is when the USFL debuted and there is a good documentary about it. It brings back alot of memories as I grew up in the 80's. Check it out, it's well worth the time and you will be surprised to see how many people involved with the USFL went on to play roles in the NFL. The USFL also came up with instant replay(with a red bean bag) and the two point conversion. Lots of good stuff for anyone over the age of forty. It's in six parts.

I didn't watch the ESPN series but I do remember the USFL.  I remember my parents wouldn't let me stay up to watch the Michigan Panthers in the championship game.  I was sooo mad.

It's a good story, and lot's of good stories inside of it. If you like football, you'll like it. I like the interview with Bobby Hebert: "It gave me a shot at professional football that I never had, talk about rags to riches, I went from being on food stamps for four months to making 250k and winning a championship" (that was the game you missed :( )

He went on to play in the NFL

The Birmingham Stallions were a kick butt team then; they were loaded with all sorts of talent when they played back then.

It's not just the players, but people like Lee Corso, Charley Steiner, Steve Spurrier, Burt Reynolds, so many people you see and say, "wow, I didn't know that". I like the interview with Rick Neuheisel(QB with the Gunslingers at the time), where he describes the gumball rally to cash their checks, that's priceless. And some more players, Craig james, Doug Flutie, Gary Clark, Gary Anderson, so many.


I spent 1985 in St Petersburgh, FL. My friends mom got us tickets to the Tampa Bay Bandits vs the Philly Stars(Baltimore by then maybe).
