Essential missing aircraft
« on: September 22, 2001, 02:19:00 PM »
This is my list of "Essential" aircraft missing from AH (by country not priority):

American
P-39 Airacobra
P-40 Warhawk/Kittyhawk
B-25 Mitchell (J, H versions at least)

Japanese
Zeke (A6M2 early war)
Betty (B4M) medium bomber
Val dive-bomber
Nate torpedo-bomber

British
Hurricane D (40 mm cannons)
Spitfire VIII (clipped wing version)
Mosquito (yeah I know, it's coming)

German
Bf-109e
He-111
Ju-87 Stuka
Ju-52 "Tante Ju"

Russian
PE-2 medium bomber

However, I must say AH has done a bang-up job on aircraft to date (I just love the Lancaster). The ones I really miss on this list are the P-39, Ju-87 and B-25H. The "H" was a true monster for ground-attack missions, the Ju-87 was central to German air-attack policy and the P-39 was a tough little scrapper for ground attack (the Russians loved it).

With the Tu-2 coming the Pe-2 would be redundant.

The Tu-2 was by far the superior of the 2.

Nearly all of the planes Holder has listed could be considered redundant, if you choose to look at it that way.

I can't confirm anything unless HTC posts it officially.

But they did ask for details on inner cockpit and turret details. This would indicate the model is in development and at some fairly advanced point.

And if they are modelling the Tu-2, the Pe-2 would be redundant and pointless.

Sorrow,

Everything could be considered redundant and pointless once you have a fighter, bomber, transport and strike aircraft. Why have anything besides the P-51D, B-17G, C-47A and Il-2? That covers all categories.

The reason is that it makes the game more interesting. The  Pe-2 is worse than the Tu-2, but some people would rather fly the Pe-2. The Pe-2 is more useful in scenarios as the Pe-2 was used through more of the war and in vastly greater numbers than the Tu-2.

Why add the Mosquito FB.VI? The P-38L is better in nearly all ways. How about the Spitfire MkVb? What use does it have in an arena that also has the Spitfire MkIX? The P-47D-11 and P-47D-25 don't bring anything to the table that the P-47D-30 doesn't.

Exactly Karnak, I'd like to see not just the uber planes but the "Essential" WWII aircraft from the different eras of development. You can't effectively have a Battle of Britain scenario without a Bf-109e to compete with the Spitfire I and Hurricane I.

A LOT of the American action in the Pacific was with F4F Wildcats (sorry I missed this one, it is essential) against A6Ms. Only later in the war did they use F6Fs and Corsairs. It is a real challenge to fly the F4F effectively against the A6Ms.

Pointless and redundant because it was designed for the exact same purpose and roles as the PE-2. Except it did them all better....

Better example- Would you want a bomber only varient of the Mossie? Or the more popular one with nose guns?

The plane was co-designed with the Pe-2 but never did quite replace it. Anyone who would want a Pe-2 for scenarios would need his head examined. Christ on a pole- the two even look the same. The Tu-2 just happens to be a better plane.

Sorrow,

If somebody sets up a 1942 East Front scenario the Tu-2 would have no place there.  What you'd have is "Do the Russians want any bomber?"  It'd be the Pe-2 or nothing.

The Tu-2 and Pe-2 are not the same plane. People want the F4F and it is to the F6F what the Pe-2 is to the Tu-2. The fact that it would be slaughtered doesn't stop people from wanting it.

BTW, an unarmed Mosquito B.XVI would be very, very nice. 4,000lb bomb moving at 410+mph.  :D
