Movie Platoon
« on: October 30, 2009, 12:20:40 PM »
Last night Platoon was on and so I watched it, probably the 50th time.

Had a couple questions and was wondering if anyone knew.

During the last battle, when the company is being overrun, the captain calls in an airstrike.  He says "my call, drop ordinance on my 'poz'.."

Anyone know what POZ or P-ah-z means?

Also, does anyone speak Vietnamese?  Just before the main characters pill box is blow up by a rocket, that they just escape, there is an NVA guy shouting orders on what sounds like a bullhorn.

Anyone ever seen a translation of that dialog?

...yeah...I guess I got too much time on my hands.

IIRC, he was referring to dropping on his "pos" = position.

Watching the movie 50 times you probably know that the director Oliver Stone was in the bunker that the Sapper hit. I always get a kick out of that.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

No I didn't realize that, thanks for pointing that out.

Actually I found a translation of the NVA bullhorn guy, it goes like this:

"The Jokers are squeekers.....now we bwow up you bunker GI"    :bolt:

a anti-war war movie.

Some of the best war movies have been anti-war ones, All Quiet on the Western Front being a classic example.  What better way to convey the horrors of war?

Yeah.  The best war movies seem to be ones that have the anti-war crowd cheering, and the 'Gung ho' crowd cheering too.

After 'Saving Private Ryan' and the 'Band of Brothers' everything that came before seems pretty lame now.

What are the movies that rise above?   Platoon is a good candidate.   'Midway' and 'Tora Tora Tora' for their time were fantastic.

Never heard of that one, Vulcan.  So, I just added it to the top of my Netflix queue.

Great film!  Same guy also comes out as one of the Black hawk's that go down in the movie, "Black Hawk Down".  :)

I think there's a country singer in the film, along with a few others that went to make other films.  GREAT FILM!

Excellent movie, managed to watch it when it came out, recall it was on HBO at the time.

Another great war move was A Walk in the Sun, with Dana Andrews.  One of the first war movies (believe the war was still going on in the Pacific when it was released) that touched on the subject of battle fatigue syndrome.  The scene when they are out in the open and get strafed by a Bf 109 was fantastic.

If you ever get a chance to see it, "84 Charlie mopic"
Low budget, but quite different.

That the one with a mostly all black LRRP squad that had an army photography attached to them on a mission that they found out later was basically a suicidal decoy mission?  If it's the same one, it was a good movie.

I don't like black hawk down. Its not the movie but the film and pictures aired on the news, that never should've been.IMO

Ahh Platoon, good one pass the ganja! :D
