Wireless
« on: November 04, 2009, 06:11:07 PM »
I have a very low end computer. I have a wireless pci card that I use to connect to the game. My question is, will this cause any delays or affect my gaming experience drasticaly?  I have very good pings between 47-63 but that might just be to my modem. I have been told that I've warped a couple of times but not lately. Today just seemed I had everything right in front of me and couldn't hit them from 200 yds out. It was like rubber bullets. Didn't know if it was cause of my wifi connection. Laugh at will if this is too obvious :)

 :x  :lol  :D

Just kidding  :D, it's an honest question and a good place to bring it.  I can't give you too many technical details but I can tell you what I did in my situation.  I was running off wireless for a while, it worked pretty well, I don't remember ever having warped too bad.  My problem was frequent discos.  I ran a 50ft ethernet cord from my wireless router to my laptop.  That hard line made all the difference.  Speeds were 3x higher not having to travel through walls and all that.

Folks, play nice.

Some people can receive rock-solid connections via wireless PCI cards, others aren't so fortunate. Either way, wireless connections are never going to provide 100% stability when it comes to delivering and receiving packets. Even on the best wireless connections of today, a packet will eventually be lost.

If you were receiving good ping rates and no lag/warping before the switch to WiFi, my first thought would of course be that the source of the problem is the wireless connection.

Ping itself isn't a good way to determine if your connection to Aces High is decent. Aces High requires a steady connection, not necessarily a fast one. What you want to look at is ping time fluctuation and packet loss. The first can be roughly measured just by looking at the arena list. If it's hopping all over the place, your "connection" will suffer.

To get a more detailed look at both, you can use a program called PingPlotter. Have a look in this thread for the server IPs and some general hints and tips. By using PingPlotter to test your connection to the MA server, you can get a good gauge of how well you're connected. Set it to do fast samples (one every second or more, if it lets you) and a high number of samples (say for fifteen minutes, or 900 samples in the case of one sample per second) and leave your computer be. It will generate a graph with many fancy lines and things that you can interpret or post here for someone to look at.
