Hristo, because we already had the F4U-1D, and because the F4U-1C was the easiest varient to do from ANY of the planes available, so it increased the number of aircraft in the game with the least amount of work.
It is really amusing (seriously, I start laughing at every -1C whine anymore) to see how much the -1C irritates the Luftwaffe crowd. I mean really... I fly it just the same as a Fw190. Whats the big difference? Because it is American and can do the exact same job as the Fw190A8 ? Hell, I would have thought that 190 pilots would have loved the thing. Its right up their alley. The biggest difference is that its blue instead of gray.
Oh wait.... I get it, the -1C means that people OTHER than the Luftwaffe gets to fly big tough fast 4 cannon birds

Leonid, you ever seen the P-38 varient (testbed aircraft?) that could drop a torpedo? I have a book that shows a series of 4 or 5 pics of it making a torpedo run. Would be fun
