You won't need XP for anything but some very old gaming titles or legacy software. Windows 7 works great generally speaking.

I never boot into XP anymore even though I have a dualboot system. There has been 2-3 programs so far that I couldn't get to work with windows 7 properly but I can live without them.

The 64-bit hype that's going on is mostly hype - it doesn't bring any real world performance benefits on current software. In some rare occasions you might benefit from the larger memory available but with current games running on 32-bit code the 64-bit OS really gives nothing in return.

Having said that I'm running win7x64 on two of my gaming boxes and it delivers a very smooth gameplay especially on AH (and after disabling ipv6 and optimizations from networking). There's really no valid reason anymore not to use x64 - but it would be a blatant lie to tell you x64 will boost your performance somehow. Windows7 will provide a smoother AH2 gameplay for you even in 32 bit versions though (in my experience, loads faster and doesn't stutter with sound). In reality it's much slower than XP32 even though you won't probably notice the difference.

As has been said, changing out the OS "just because" doesn't make a lot of sense - it's much effort for little gain.

What I'd suggest is to wait until for the inevitable Windows "freak out", and then (when you'd be putting a significant amount of work into repairing/recovering/reloading the OS anyway) switch OS's.
