MMA fans, Fedor vs. Rogers wadcha think?
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:29:46 PM »
Any other MMA fans out there?  Just watched the Fedor v Rogers fight, I think Rogers did better then a lot of people thought he would.  Probably broke Fedor's nose and escaped a couple near arm-bars by Fedor in the first round.   Plus Rogers looked absolutely shocked after Fedor KO,d him, I think he had the confidence, just not the skill (yet).   Rogers wants a rematch, I still don't think he could handle Fedor though, especially now Fedor has fought him once and found the weakness in his boxing.

Now will we ever see Fedor v Lesnar?  That's the fight many REALLY want to see.

What do ya'll think?

As phenomenal as Fedor is, Lesnar is just too massive. With him, you never know.

It's not just that he's so massive, he's quicker than many welterweights. He's just a freak of an athlete and I don't think Fedor could compete. I would however like to see Fedor fight in 205 division.

That's the truth. Lesnar is an icredible fighter to watch, but he's pretty stuck up from his wrestling days, that's the only thing I don't particularly care for him about.

Didn't see the Fedor fight, I would have liked to, but didn't.

Fedor is good, damn good.... but he has been very lucky at times.  Last night was one of them, the big fella had him down punding on his face, one of those hits right, and it would have been over.  Didn't arlovski beat up on him pretty good but didn't finish him and ended up catching one when he jumped?

That's just a ridiculous statement, Fedor has beaten many opponents bigger than Brock;  Mark Coleman, Andrei Arvloski, that freaking giant 7'+ Chinese guy whose name I can't remember, Tim Sylvia, and now Rogers.  Size is not a problem for Fedor!

I agree I was a little worried for Fedor when Rogers got in a few seconds of good ground and pound, but Fedor kept his composure and nearly got an arm bar out of it. (just like he did to Mark Coleman)  I'll agree that the punch that Ko'd Arvloski was a bit of luck for Fedor, as Arvloski ran right into it.  But last nights KO of Rogers was pure precision on Fedor's part.  He said afterward that he had been studying Roger's footwork, and he knew Rogers opened up half a second before he threw his big right, so Fedor waited for his opportunity and got his right in first, that is smart fighting. (not to mention gutsy considering Rogers' HUGE reach advantage)

As for Fedor v Lesnar:  I think Brock COULD MAYBE win, but I think he would still be a big underdog.  I just can't  see where Brock has an advantage on Fedor;

Fedor has beaten guys who are better boxers than Brock (Arvloski, Rogers).  He's beaten guys who are as good of wrestlers as Brock (Mark Coleman)  He's beaten guys who are better jui jitsu than Brock (Nogeruia, Cro Cop).  I see Brock using his speed to take Fedor to the mat on his back, but then Fedor just waits for the tiniest of mistakes and -boom- Brock's submitted.  Fedor's submitted, Coleman, Randleman Sylvia, that giant Chinese guy, and many others from on his back.  And don't forget Frank Mir submitted Lesnar in their first fight.  I think the odds would have to be 2-3/1 in favor of Fedor

Sadly we may never see Fedor v Lesnar because the Dana White won't let Brock out of his UFC contract, and Fedor wants nothing to do with White and the UFC.

Edit: just looked it up, the aforementioned "giant Chinese guy" is called Hong-Man Choi, and is actually Korean.

Uh... Cro Cop has never been known for his jiu jitsu. He's known for a right high kick. The problem with your analysis is that Coleman is old and broken, and not good without roid cycles. Arlovski isn't that big, and well past his prime. Sylvia doesn't have much of a chin, never really had one, only thing it proved was Fedor can hit a little harder than Couture. The monstrous Korean guy is not much of an MMA fighter, and Rogers has no pedigree either.. neither have wins over real top 10 level competition.

Lesnar put on a very serious clinic in how to shut down the half-guard, and that's where Fedor would end up against Brock. That would go extremely bad for Fedor. The way Fedor would have to win is standing KO (very doable against Brock, he's no kickboxer), or go to the ground and be on top (nobody has done that to Lesnar). It would be a very interesting fight. Fedor is just a monster, but Brock hasn't even really been taken down before since his wrestling is so freakishly dominant. The kneebar he gave up to Mir was just a noob mistake he's done a lot to correct since then... Mir never came close with anything the second fight, or even had a chance to set something up, and in a straight grappling match you'd find Fedor and Mir very closely matched.

I'd call it a 1.5:1 for Fedor because of his experience, but a Lesnar TKO would not surprise me one bit. Lesnar has done everything right except for catching mono. Had the bankroll going in to buy the best trainers and sparring partners, and no financial obligations so he's free to train 24x7.

but we'll never see it :( UFC will not co-promote with ANYBODY. They shouldn't either. They'd be stupid to do it, and that would open up the road to let MMA end up like boxing. Fedor won't fight in the UFC without M-1 co-promoting... apparently ever.

Nah that wasn't luck. That was a textbook open guard to knee bar transition. Brock got excited and made a beginner's level mistake, and he paid for it. I suck, and I can hit that knee bar all day if somebody just stands there with a foot in like that.

Uhm, hello? Brock is bigger and stronger than everyone mentioned except for Hong Man Choi (who he is probably stronger than). We're not talking about height or reach advantage that usually comes from a taller opponent when we say he is just too massive for Fedor.

I think Fedor would eventually win if the fight stayed on the feet. His looping hooks and standup experience are far better than Lesnars, but how could he stop someone with Brock's speed, size, and skill from taking him down? I don't think he could. I can attest (Indy can probably back me up on this) that if you have a bigger/stronger opponent in your guard who just wants to stay chest to chest with you, you aren't going anywhere without a huge energy expenditure (even harder against a great wrestling opponent) . Look at the second Lesnar/Mir fight for a good example, or watch Clay Guida ride any one of his opponents to a victory.

Ink you're so right, Belfort/Silva will be awesome. I hope for Marquart/Silva to follow!

Yeah pretty much. It can suck horribly... especially with US MMA rules, where you can't drop elbows to the top of the head to discourage them. I squealing hate rolling with wrestlers, especially the highschool guys with no guard passing game. They just get into your guard, jam their head into your chin, and lay there. Incredibly annoying.
