I think your work on the pics is great.  I'm not familiar with GIMP but in PS you've got the option of doing a 'drop shadow' on individual layers.  Typically when I'm doing a text effect I put at least a little drop shadow on them to make the letters stand out

Messed around with gimp today...dont know what the heck half of the features do and i ended up with this shot of my g6 shootin down a n1k.

I dont even know what to do for half of the features/editing stuff sooo....its not the best but its ok

Looks like you tried to "blur" the image. What you used was the smudge tool. To get a blurred image look under the "filters" tab in the menu.

i wasnt really trying to blur. just clicked on stuff and made things happen but i will try that out sometime

You made a cool smoke trail and fire for the NIki. Everything else is overkill imo.   Try not to blur into the actual airplanes..  Use the water droplet (blur/sharpen ) tool instead of the smudge.  
The niki after effects are good..  You can also go into the smoke trail and add a couple of small yellow dots into it. Then take the blur tool and make them look like small fire balls...
