Question on scoring system

Have one question that cant leave me alone for quite some time now...
but first here is a little story:

I was flying at high Altitude and my squad m8 KBman was at low altitude 5-8 miles ahead... In the next few seconds KB gets jumped by high P51D and i starting to dive in my La7 towards my m8 to help him out... As I approach fight i see P51 screem zooming up past me and his missing 1 wing... KB just killed a poor stalker, but given the "effort" i had - diving from high alt i pull up and close in on wingless pony... just a quick assist think to myself. just 1 or 2 rounds in his belly... i dont want to steel this one from KBman... finally at 200 yards as pony stalls I open fire and see 1 sprite on his belly, my ammo counter now reads 448 rounds (450 full load)... so max i could put into him would be 2 x 20 mm rounds....

Pony according to the law of gravity pulls towards terra firma, i congratulate KB over RW on yet another good kill, and 40 sec later i see:
Victory 1 by vfGH0STy......

Now KB told me that he tagged pony very good - scoring 8+ hits on that pony, my on the other hand maximum 2 hits.... So how come I got the kill and not assist?

Any ideas?

Hmm.  I don't know how it determined it, but assists are meaningless.

If an aircraft is doomed, don't waste ammo on it.

but on the topic, if you got a pilot kill, you will get the credit of it regardless if someone got more pings on him before.

You hit him on the belly...could a B20 round penetrate thru the plane and explode in the cockpit?. If it is possible then it maybe is wat happened.

If not we can be in yet another example of badly placed impact-damage zones (like in the 190 engine problem)

well u see i didnt blew him up.. in fact i didnt removed any parts of his plane.... he was dead anyways... 1 wing and burning.... that shot i took was just a childish thing.. nothing more... he was just right there in my crosshairs.. Flying with a squadie assures that there wouldnt be any disscussions on stolen kill... And I couldnt even think that i will score it...

So it comes down to this:

1. First pilot puts 8+ shells and remowes 1 wing completly.
2. Second pilot puts 1-2 same shell/s into the same plane within 5 seconds without any effect.
3. First pilot gets assist.
4. Second dweeb pilot gets a kill.

If the last to score hits the winner, than it would explain sittuation, however, I had both finnished enemy, that looked undamaged getting assist in the process, and had someone finish enemy plane for me and awarding me with a kill...

The reason for this post is just curiosity... I cant understand how this system works, because in almost identical sytuations the result can be different...

LOL the better question is how does this dmg system work?

I yesterday again had the very impressive case that i pumped 10-12 20mm (i am sure, cause i use cannons and MGs seperatly) in the aft fusalage of a spit. From about 1 yrd behind cockpit to the rudder.
But the bastard flew on, no part missing. After that i got 2-3 13mm pings on this eng in a snapshot again nothing.
When another knight hit him, the spit was crippled, luckily i score the kill.
But i still wonder how a spit can be so tough.

Kill awarding is based on total damaged applied. Damage can be applied with out the plane loosing any parts.

Damage also changes with range so 2 20 mm hits at close range could do more damage than 8 50 cal hits at longer range.

R4M is not correct pilot kills are no different than any other damage.

Assist are not meeningless they help in your point total.

Thank you HT... that is exactly what i was looking for as an answer...
If you could please clarify this to me:
1. We both flew La7 with B-20 cannons
2. KBman scored 8+ hits and remowed wing there for causing damage X.
3. vfGH0STy scored 1-2 hits and caused X+Y damage.

So it is possible do more damage with 1 shell than 8 same shells?

hitech does proximity to the downed aircraft count?

Theres been times where ive shot planes out of the sky with cannons and watched another plane lower take shots and get the kill.Then when accused of killstealing Ive had some claim they just put a few mgs into them.I assumed they got kill because they were closer to them when they bailed/crashed.

maybe since you were much close than your wingman when you hit with those 2 20mms you did more damage?

Going out on a thread here, its the only thing I can think of.

Damage inflicted/damage models and kill scoring are crazy.

Cause Hitech jumped in, i would like to ask a question:

U say bullet power reduces with range. Now i wonder if cannon rounds hitting power is less reduced with distance than that of full metall bullets?
A 20 mm HE round packs the most punch within its explosives not in the bullets kinetic energy.
Same goes in the comparison of cannon AP and HE rounds.
