Strafing CVs
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:25:53 AM »
I wish CVs were not strafeable? I can understand strafing guys on the deck but that in no way kills the boat itself.

not necesarily... a 30mm round will do some real damage to the more vulnerable parts of the deck

Nothing important enough to matter to keeping the CV afloat.

Well, i think that even a round of 30 mm to sink a CV are a bit strange. Yes it can do some real damage to the CV, but not sink it.

i sunk cv once by straffing with b26's.  I had damaged the boat with eggs, but not enought to sink it.  I think about a 3 second burst sunk it, I know I was surprised myself.  but the funniest was yesterday with tanks (yes tanks) heavily damaged cv  :rofl

Ships larger than destroyers should not be able to be damaged, other than their light AA positions, by aircraft guns smaller than 50mm.  There are several instances in which destroyers were sunk by strafing, but no larger ship that I am aware of ever was even threatened by it.

I was watching a program on the Canadian Navy using a ship for target practice.  One of the choices was a F-18 hornet using the 20mm package for strafing.  The strafing would be used to make a hole in the side to allow water in.

That is the only viable option to strafe a ship with guns.

What kind of ship?

Well, tanks fire HE shells that can create large holes, similar to rockets. AP pierces the ship and can create shrapnel to damage fleshy things and destroy various systems. What really is funny is that the CV was close enough to be killed by tanks. :|

And, how long did the ship float before it sunk?

It was a program that aired on the military channel.  3 ways were used I believe.  Ship guns, cruise missile and 20mm strafing.  The F-18 did make his strafing run and contributed to the sinking of the ship.

The ship was either a cruiser or destroyer that was obsolete.

In order to sink ships you will have to penetrate armor that is intended to hold up against 15 cm shells fired from a range of 12-15 kilometers. It would seem very unlikely that even 75mm shells at closer range could do much to the hulls but certainly not 30mm or 20mm or especially 50 cal. Splashing the deck with shells wont do anything effective to sinking the ships.

Maybe the 20mm killed the pump operators that were keeping the ship afloat. It wasn't the that the 20mm holed the armour - that was already done.

Okay - it does mean you need a bit of imagination.

Unless of course you were the one that spent the previous 20mins putting 20/30mm into the CV and then it sank it all by yourself. That is wrong.
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

I'm sorry, but in no way can we compare the 20mm vulcan cannon on the F-18 to any aircraft weapon we deploy in the game.  It has a muzzle velocity of over 1km/sec.

Thats a big imagination considering bilge pumps are in the bottom of the ship, below the armor.
