If that wall is traditional construction in the UK, he punched a brick wall covered in plaster. That doesn't give way at all. Punch a wall in the US and even if you hit the stud, at least it's a piece of wood that will give a bit.
I tried to drill a hole in a wall in the UK... Even with a brand new masonry bit, I got through an inch of plaster and maybe 1/2 inch of whatever the heck was underneath the plaster, before the bit was worn out. It was an original wall in an old house that had been rebuilt several times, so it was probably a 100+ year old stone or ultra-hard brick wall.
