Troop Gliders
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:25:18 PM »
10 perk points allows you to tow a glider with a goon containing extra troops or a jeep. Troops in glider, supps in goon maybe. Just a thought to expand the airbourne troop dynamic.  Anyone........Bueller?

Can't open links from this computer and will admit I don't know much about the airplane and glider dynamic however I can only assume that the pulling aircraft would not be loaded with supplies or troops. I don't know how weight is modeled for troops or supplies in c-47s but I can venture to guess an actual fully loaded C-47 wouldn't be able to haul a second fully loaded dead weight a/c.

Folks, play nice.

Sure it could although at the cost of airspeed. The Goon only needs to provide forward thrust since the glider provides the lift. In theory, a Goon could carry more if either engine power were increased or increased wing area with the same power, but losing airspeed. In the case of the glider, you are increasing the goons carrying capacity by essentially increasing the amount wing area and lift it's forward motion produces.

Additionally, in the case of AH, 10 troops is 1/3 a C47's troop capacity but am not sure what the weight of supplies are, that could be a limiting factor.

drag is a byproduct of lift.

That would be interesting to see, although i doubt it will be actually put in.

Roger that! That is why take-off distance would be longer and top airspeed would be slower. You are increasing lift at the expense of drag (speed). There is a point that the given power would not be enough to overcome the increase in drag but the gliders worked because this point was not reached. Think of it like this, instead of overloading a pick-up beyond it's capacity, you can distribute and even add to it by pulling a trailer since now part of the weight has it's own "lift" (wheels) and the result is more cargo, less speed, less acceleration, etc. The trucks engine now only has to overcome the loads inertia and not bear the full brunt of "lifting" the weight. Not exactly the same but analigous none-the-less.

With more troops per drop enhancing offense, you'd need to find a way to re-balance the game for defence. Mannable machine gun posts/pill boxes by the map room maybe?
Here we are, living on top of a molten ball of rock, spinning around at a 1,000mph, orbiting a nuclear fireball and whizzing through space at half-a-million miles per hour. Most of us believe in super-beings which for some reason need to be praised for setting this up. This, apparently, is normal.

Not really, most smart missions run more than one goon or LVT just in case. I just think the glider would add another option. Maybe not really offering much of an advantage but giving a new look to troop drops. Remember, AH is about simulation and period immersion.

Someone mark it on a calendar!!!   :D

I'm not a fan of this wish.  I don't really see how it would be useful.

LOL Banshee.  Anyway, it would add another option for troop delivery and something totally helpless to shoot at... :lol

I think during the war the C-47s actually pulled two gliders per aircraft.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

"I say yes to this, but god help the glider pilot!"

Especially if dragged along at over 200 mph by a Dakota.
