Yet another WWI planeset question-
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:46:57 PM »
I know that its going to just be a dogfighting arena (at least that's the plan now)- no strats, no bombers, no 'War'. I'm fine with that. Not looking to get into an argument over the goals of the new addition. I'm just happy we're getting it, and overjoyed at the interest in WWI aircraft and fliers that's been generated since the announcement.

However, is this new WWI add-on going to only be late-war aircraft? Only 1917-18? Or will it eventually creep forward to fill in the planeset a bit with earlier models? I mean, will it always be higher profile, big name fighters like the Camel, Dr.I and D.VII (with which we are starting out) and later additions to this same point, like the SPAD, Nieuport 28, Albatros D.Va, Se.5 et al? Or will it eventually include the earlier, but no less important boxes like the Eindecker, Fe.2, Dh.2, FB.5, Avro 504, Sopwith Pup, Fokker D.I and D.II, Halberstadt... the list goes on and on. Aircraft that might not be the first most folks think of when they think of WWI dogfights, but that are no less important.

I for one hope like heck that it will eventually roll forward to fill in everything from the Eindecker right through to the planes of the Fall of 1918. Does anyone else feel the same way, or are we all just happy to have some wood and canvas to fly and don't really care about 'filling out the planeset'? I know I'll fly it either way, just wondering who else feels the same as I do about it and what the long-term goals at HTC might be.

I would be really surprised to see the Eindecker or DH2 from HTC in my lifetime.  But who knows? ;)  I'm all for the 1915-1916 fighters.

I've always been a big fan of the Eindecker and its pilots (big Boelcke fan) but I understand MMP reluctance to include it- its relatively slow and not very maneuverable, its only claim to fame was its synchronized gun and the skill and innovativeness of some of its pilots. But still, if it was matched up with other planes of the same point in time (like the Avro, which started out as a recon bird and ended up being used as a bomber and fighter too) it could also be a lot of fun and real learning experience for those of us who are drawn here by the history and love of the planes themselves rather than the need to just rack up cartoon kills.

Guess that will depend on how popular the arena becomes.  As the present version of AH2 shows, however, it isn't realistically possible to create all planes for all wars.

Yeah, that was bit of a typo- I meant everything as in the whole period of the war, not every aircraft that flew. I know thats both impossible and impractical.

You're assuming that the present version of AH is good evidence for that conclusion.  I can think of a sim that has all of the early war aircraft we wish for, i.e. He 111, G4M, Ki-43, P-36, Yak-1, Lagg-3, etc. ;)

Sorry for the hijack, bring on the E.III!

I would love to see a Sopwith Pup or a 'Tripehound'.

Think its a great addition, personally hope they add the Spad sooner rather than later.

About a million years ago as a snot nosed kid building plastic models was always my favorite would be great to fly one on the PC rather than run round with my arm in the air :P

I had the same question  in the previous thread, had it all laid out pics and all, and hit the frickin back button  and never reposted.

I would be nice to leave some of the candy on the tree so to speak and start with the early models. Like the Eindecker would be a perk plane in the early set.  I sure hope that we dont get 2-3 arenas.

I sure hope that we dont get 2-3 arenas.

I don't think the numbers will require it after it all pans out.
