How many civilian owned mach capable birds are allowed to break the sound barrier?
Those two engines in burner are gonna put a serious dent in someones pocketbook.

For the uneducated in aircraft safety and maintenance could you elaborate?

Obviously Strip, you know enough to know that they actually have received a registration number.  You should also know that registering and getting an airworthiness certificate for these exotics in this country is, what's are the best words to describe this.... strenuous at best.  In my little ole opinion, those aircraft are going to require a hellacious amount of money to even get to that point with the FAA.  Introduce new rules by the TSA, and all of a sudden, those aircraft aren't duch hot commodities any more.   

Seriously, they haven't sold yet, and there were several big dogs in the biz that wanted them until the powers that be quietly told them, "No."  That should tell you something.


The reason I say this, is owing to my involvement in an attempt to import an MiG-29 for a "big dog".  I traveled to see and inspect, actually got to sit in it during an engine run up to prove it ran, I declined the flight check.  The big dog actually got close to trying to bring ehr in, and that little voice came and said, "No, we'll let you bring it in, but it will not fly here."

I hope they can do it, but it is not very likely.

I would save up for quite a while for a backseat ride in an Su-27 or Mig-29. Might be a hell of a ride.

The same reason F-18's and MiG-29's aren't going into civilian hands.

You can have an F-5 if you'd like.  A host of other 1950s and 1960s airplanes to include an F4 Phantom II.  You're not getting a Flanker or Fulcrum.

I don't think any "average civilian" owns a Mach 2 jet. They're a private company working for U.S. Defense Agencies, Defense Contractors and Foreign Governments. Or so they say on their "about" page. They also say: “Red Air” was formed in 1999 as the Military Support Division of “Air USA”. Since 1994 Air USA has been very successful in providing Foreign Military Aircraft for Aviation Enthusiast as well as participation in Air Shows and providing Commercial Air Services."

In any case, what's the practical difference between a civilian Mig-21, a civilian Mig-23 and a civilian Mig-29? All are Mach 2+ capable and none of them have any military avionics or weapons.

I'm an average citizen and I can go buy a MiG-21.  I can own it, operate it and maintain it.

Like Bodhi said I could go buy a Flanker or a Fulcrum but I'd never be allowed to get it off the ground with an N registration in the USA.  This is subject to change in the future.
