It was a surprise to me just how small the cockpit was in a 109. Must have been horrifically uncomfortable on longer sorties (Thinking of in Russia here)

Sounds like he gave a fairly unbiased account of both aircraft, whether negative or positive.

I hope your joking, otherwise get over it....

He said the same basic things I've heard from almost every pilot, even German vets, who have sat in both aircraft.  They both have shortcomings, but the Spitfire's cockpit is far better for combat.

The 109 was very cramped, defiantly not anywhere near the standard of my beloved Spitfire!

Actually I was really shocked by how small the cockpit in the spitfire was as well  :O
I really wish he'd stop talking crap about that 109.  Its really annoying.

He was giving an impartial evaluation based I take it on cockpit design in general there was a fair bit he does and doesn't like about the 109 and the spitfire if you watched that video as well. I've watched a lot of interviews with spit and 109 pilots and the reoccurring theme is that its who is in the cockpit that counts, also seen videos claiming the 109s awkward box canopy was there because the technology to mass produce optically excellent curved plexglass didn't exist then, the guy in the cockpit of the spit talks about the distorted view from the front quarter glass section he doesn't however comment on the view through the bubble hood I'll try digging the clips up but the root argument was that long range visibility was better in the 109  :headscratch:

"under which all manner of nastiness could be going on"      :rofl

Fantastic.  Also I figured the 109 cockpit was tiny due to pilot anecdotes I have heard, but that was nuts.  Good thing people were a bit shorter back then...  :aok

I am only 5'9", but it made me think that even I would have trouble squeezing in there.  Now, if I were 19 again and weighed 160lbs, it might be easier. :D

Yea it did look like that gentleman was a pretty tall guy, so it makes sense that he didn't really fit.  That being said, I wouldn't want to get in there at 6'1" 190.   :uhoh  Good thing I can fit in my G2/G6 in game :)

I wonder the Luftwaffe ever switched pilots around according to their physical build?  I'd imagine they would have to, but I can't recall ever seeing a document indicating size requirements...anyone help me out here?
