APC UPS question

I have the BX1500LCD Back-UPS XS and I am using the cable protection and data port. I have tried the "RJ-45/RJ-11" ports for the ethernet line but it doesnt work at all. I dont think I really need it but I would like to know why it doesnt function?

I don't remember the model UPS I have (I'm at work right now), but I used to have my coax cable running through the UPS.  I started having connection issues to to point I'd completely lose the Internet altogether.  I unplugged the cable and put it straight into my modem - problem solved.

The cable guy also said it's not a good idea to run your cable Internet feed through the UPS...maybe it's just APC units, don't know.  In either case, I'm not sure what the benefit really was anyway.

the main "benefit" is that its not just a UPS but also a surge protector in the very rare event that you would get a power spike through that line you would be protected

Ive personally never plugged cable/ethernet/or even regular phone line in the dialup days to one

Im sure somewhere sometime someone had a surge through one of those lines.... but I would guess that compared to the standard electric lines those would be a very rare occurrence............ probably a better chance that a heard of hippos will knock on your door and steal your toaster

I thought the RJ ports were for phone circuits only? Not ethernet?

I think RJ45 is Ethernet, RJ11 is phone.

RJ-45 is really a bad choice oAPC to use (calling the connector that I mean) but the documentation says phone/modem/network.

Chalenge...those are RJ11 only ports...the RJ45 capacity is a misnomer on that UPS. If you were to open the case you would see the wiring on it is for 4 (RJ11) or 6 (RJ25) wire connections...try hooking a phone line into them and they will work.
