City Strat Smoke
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:42:21 PM »
Me and a few of my squaddies went on a bomb run last night, dropping our eggs on the new strat system. I have noticed something that might bring to people's attention. As I was bombing the City portion of the strat, it was very difficult to tell which city blocks were destroyed. Note- we were bombing from an altitude of 29K. So as we were coming around to make another pass, all the city blocks looked so similar, it was hard to tell what has been destroyed and what has not.

I propose that the destroyed sections of the city have some smoke or fire billowing up into the air. It will be much easier to hit the undamaged buildings this way. Especially when bombing over 20K, as we will begin to see more of that in the near future.

Wouldn't the smoke make the other targets harder to see?

Perhaps you were bombing the "unbombable" residential sections...

The cities are large, covering around 8 square miles. They consist of the various types of factory complexes, an industrial city center which serves as the function as the city strat, and a surrounding residential area that is not bombable and has no strat value.

I tested this out last night, and I do agree with Plazus. Its hard to tell the differance between bombed out areas and unbombed. I hit the centre of the the city and got the damage, but flying out, I could hardly see where I had hit.

+1

P.S. Is the city now in squares? Seems one bomb takes out a square of the city rather than just a building?

I think them mentioned a city block is 1 object way back when they introduced us to the screenshots.

Just means you delay your carpet bombing a bit more (scatter the bombs out more).

As for smoke, that would probably kill FPS for many sectors in all directions! hehehe

On the plus side, there are many more blocks. Isn't that entire center island bombable? So if you remember to delay you should have fun.

Far as I know it is, also some of the outside is as well. I went back and did another run, and hit 4 blocks in the centre and 2 on the East side of the River. I wish HT would put out a map of whats bombable and whats not. At the moment its sort of Trial and Error, and when the strats are at the back of the map, its a lot of flying time for a hit or miss affair

From memory... the "non target" is destructable... but does nothing to the strats.

It won't slow the resupply of the strats around the city. So bombing the city does something, blowing up the citizens does not.

P.S. you hit the Walmart! That must be it!
