RA that speed was for Macchi-Castoldi plane made for Schneider Trophy. I don't know what was that Spit's top speed but propably it was slower than Supermarine S.6B made for that race with speed of 407,5mph, world record 1931.

IIRC, the schneider cup planes were way faster than the comperable land based racers at the time.  It's amazing what a cash prize can do to advance a technology.  Almost as much as war, and certainly more than whether or not it's got wheels or floats.
