Bomb sight question
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:52:15 AM »
Because you weasels are flying everywhere but the AvA, I've been spending some time learning the AvA bomb sight.  Makes sense after you do it a few times, and hey, the instructions are right there every time you hit U to calibrate.

However, I sense that there must be a better way to line up with the target than what I'm doing.  From the pilot's seat I can get the plane turned generally towards the target.  Then I dive down to the bombardier's seat to do the calibration thing.  Once finished with that task I would like to be able to stay down there and direct the plane more precisely to the target; but I find that neither the rudder pedals nor anything else seem to move the plane from the bombardier's position.  So I jump back up in the pilot's seat, line it up a bit better, then back down to the bomb sight and so on.  Not only is this making me tired and (more than normally) confused, but it makes for a crummy bomb run most times.

So...is there a secret?

You don't use pedals when in bombsight but simply your joystick. Left/right and your bomber will make very large coordinated turns. Perfect for fine tuning, but not very effective for bigger change of heading. The turn radius is so big that (depending on alt & speed) the turning is barely noticeable at first when looking at the ground. (Of course you can't do this while in calibration mode)
Personally, I fly bombers from front/belly turret position most of the time (using pedals here to steer the plane). For turning around & lining up again with my target (for next buildings or hangars), I use belly with external view to keep target in view all the time, then switching back to bombsight for final adjustments.

All this is independent from bombsight arena setting, works the same for "AvA" precision bombsight as well as MA simple sight.

for large adjustments jump into a gunner position and use rudder to turn from there rather than from the pilot seat, maintains your speed/altitude so it doesnt mess up your calibration. for small adjustments you steer from the MA bombsite using joystick aileron axis, I assume its the same for the old-style bombsite.

edit: simulpost!

Thanks to you and Lusche.  Never occurred to me to try the stick in place of the rudders, will give it a whirl.  Ju88 doesn't have a front gunner position anyway.

That guy has most of this game down to a science.  Fact is, once people tipped me off to the way the bombardier can turn the plane, even I could hit things with a bomber.  I was pleased to see that the calibration requirements force a more historic bomb run and create a more life-like bomb pattern.  Kind of a shame they turned it off in the MAs, those people are missing something, but at least we have it here.

Not that I've decided to become a full-time bomber pilot, you understand.
