I think I'm gonna fully spoil myself for Christmas :)
« on: December 13, 2009, 04:30:01 PM »
Well... I've been getting stuff to finally complete my own PC and let my siblings have the other one so I can 1: not have to listen to them whining about not being able to get on, and 2: having a FULLY made by myself PC instead of some stuff that came with the other one  :D

So far this is what I got:

4GB (2x2GB) OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066 Mhz

6X160GB HDDs (4 Seagate, 2WD Caviars)

ASUS VK246H 24" HD 1080p monitor

LG GH24NS DVD Burner

OCZ Alchemy Elixir keyboard (not bought yet)

and hopefully an HD5850 or 5870 if I can find it for a good price.

All this came on top of my already existing:
Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H (RMAed, hopefully it comes back fixed)

AMD Phenom II X4 940

Antec P190+1200 Case

PNY Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB (will be replaced by the HD5850/5870)

Total for this build: about $1100

I can't WAIT to get all this stuff in the mail!

Well, not only do I need some for my PC, but I need to replace my moms in her old stone age PC, it's about 6-8 yrs old and could die any second, she has a lot of irreplaceable stuff on it so I'm gonna put one or two in it, then there's the hp one Im using now till I get all my stuff, I may put one in it, and all the others are for me. I wanted more than one for backups, seperation and what not, I think I'm gonna set it up like this: OSes "XP,Vista, maybe 7 soon, possibly OSX too" on one, games and programs on another, pictures/files like pictures and stuff on another one, and backup/recovery data on the last one.

External HD's are fine for backing up, but don't make it your only source.  Your external HD can fail just as easily as your internal hard drive.  IMO most external HD units are harsher environments than inside your computer.  Let's airflow on a lot of them, they're prone to taking more physical abuse as well.

I highly recommend you burn back up copies on CD's and DVD's (multiple copies).  Or use an online web space as well.

couldn't agree more, I personaly have dvds in a safe deposit box. Theres a saying "you don't know what you have till you don't have it anymore"
I learned that lesson one day going home and the fire department was there, but my home wasn't.

Yeah, I have XP on a disc, Vista recovery on a disc, but I am trying to get Vista itself on a disc, and, with Vista being itself, is giving me problems doing so.

Windows seven has some sort of tracking client, it send the location, address and what not to some goober at microsoft. It looks like you can easily turn it off, but it's still scary, imagine what would happen if the spyware coders found a way to hack it...  pedofiles will be showin up at your door every 5 minutes, lol

Even if Microsoft collects that information, I'd imagine there's a lot easier ways of finding out your address than trying to get the info from Microsoft. Also I'd imagine that pedophiles are too stupid/lazy to find that info either way... look at how many still show up for 'To Catch a Predator'. :lol
