Are the days of the dogfighting 110 over?
« on: December 13, 2009, 09:06:21 PM »
I saw that 110 NOE thread the other day.  It actually inspired me to go fly a little.

I used to log between 60-120 hours per month in the game.  In August I was down to 36:05, Sept 6:38, Oct 3:55 and Nov 1:10 and my "skills", as little as they were, went out the window.

So it may have been a little foolhardy last night to log on and try to fly the Bf-110G2 as a pure dogfighter.  Adding to it I took off with the big gun package (just in case I ran across a buff or two, which I did and the first one, a B-26 killed me without getting killed as I readjusted to the 30MM cannons).

After a flight and augering death trying to figure out why my aileron trim tabs (mapped to my stick) were'nt working I upped a field back from what looked to be a pretty balanced fight between the Bish and the Rooks in the SW corner of LW Orange.  I WEP'd to 10K then shut the WEP off and climbed to 17K.  As I approached our field I spotted a pair of P-51D's about 2K below me headed my way so I turned to engage.  We went around a couple of times and one of the Ponies started to straighten out to gain E.  I WEP'd watching my six and took chase.  I couldn't believe I was actually closing the gap on him as he broke right.  I glanced back and started to turn when I spotted the second Pony and had to abort my chase.  With both P-51's now headed the opposite direction from me and a couple of high friendlies arriving I dived out to chase an LA on the deck.  Again we went around a couple of times then the LA ran.  I WEP'd to take chase but couldn't catch him.  As I tured away I spotted a set of B-17's and started climbing to them.  I got one but he clipped my wingtip so I decided to land.  At this point I found out that my rudder wasn't mapped to my stick anymore either and I couldn't control the roll as I slowed down so I bailed giving the buff driver a kill.

After re-mapping my rudder, and encouraged by my first flight encounters (I had shot opportunities on one of the P-51's and the LA but didn't take them waiting for a better shot that never materialized) I re-upped from the same base.  Agian I WEP'd to 10K but leveled at 15K this time.  As I flew over our base all was clear so I continued on toward the enemy field.  Then, on dar, I spotted two frindly and two enemy dots.  I thought this might be perfect as I'd have a little help while I tried to get my wings back.  By the time I got there one of the friendlies was down and the other was on the deck with a P-38 and a Spit hounding him.  I dove in and took chase against the P-38 but he ran for home and, realizing I wouldn't catch him I turned to help the friendly with the Spit.  The problem with this idea was the the other friendly was no longer there and it was me alone against the Spit.  We merged and went around and it wasn't too long before I heard ping ping ping.  I rolled to reverse my turn direction and chopped throttle and he overshot.  As he did he climbed into a high yoyo so I throtled back up, hit the WEP and pulled the stick as hard as I could.  To my surprise I had gotten around pretty well and he was coming toward me from the side.  I rolled out of my bank to reduce my profile and he flew by.  As soon as he did I rolled back into my turn but this time in the opposite direction.  After a few more turns I hear ping ping ping again.  Again I chop throttle and try to roll this hog.  As I do I see the <pilot> has collided with you message.  I look up as he rolls over the top and sure enough he's smoking.  This fight continues for another minute or two.  At one point I had a shot opportunity in a left hand climbing turn and this time I tried to take it but I couldn't hold the nose long enough to connect.  After a couple more minutes I hear the familiar ping ping ping again.  Having tried everything I could think of I again chopped throttle, dumped all five notches of flaps and pulled the stick.  The nose wobbled and the ground came closer as I tried unsuccessfully to recover from my mistake.

A round of <Salutes> were exchanged.

Well, that was just too much fun.  I'd never in my wildest dreams expected to go several minutes against a Spit so I upped that pig again and headed out.  Over our field, over their field, then finally, as I approached another of our fields I engaged a pair of P-40E's that were obviously winging together.  Well, to make a long story short they made quick work of me and I logged off for the night.

So, Ive now got a K/D rate of about 0.2 in my (almost) three hours of playing this month but I don't think I've ever had more fun.  Now I'm determined to get a legitimate combat kill in the 110G-2 so if you see one out there dogfighting please go easy on me.   ;)

Yeah, and the lighter gun package if you want to stick with the G2. Since I am guilty of flying them in quite a few NOE raids, I have a fair amount of experience dogfighting in them. Even able to clip a few pony's wings and pin a few spits to the deck. Just got to get used to it and exploit their overconfidence. Plenty of dweebs approach the 110 as a bomber. Use that to your advantage.

Whenever I see a 110 I usually think to myself "easy meat on the table"...and it usually is.  Sometimes a really squirrely 110 driver can be good at keeing his nose pointed in my direction but I rarely fall to them when Im in a combat fighter.

I flew the 110g-2 almost exclusively last month think I got around 85 kills in it.Quite a few deaths too but thats mostly because I don`t know when to get out of dodge, always thinking I can get 1 more kill.I downed around 1/2 dozen planes with the rockets, everything from spits to bombers. They actually are quite effective. You should give it a try.I have films of the rocket kills but I have no idea how to post them.If I can figure it out I`ll try to atleast throw up some screen shots.

Also, the Bf 110 has usually been an excellent ride in the Battle of Britain scenario.

This is perhaps because of the generous modeling of both the 110 and the hurricane (as compared to the spit and 109 in the BOB planeset) in aces high.

I believe the 110 is too manuverable in this game. Meaning it rolls too well and perhaps has too much elevator authority (not sure on that, though).

Really?  I find the Bf110s we have in game are very similiar to their real world counterparts, outclassed by most fighters.

In BoB scenarios, I think the 110 is good in a role as an energy or B&Z fighter.  It gets beat handily if it is used in lower-speed dogfights with Spitfires or Hurricanes.  When folks use its speed, fuel injection (i.e., ability to push over into dives without engine cutting out), ability to get to altitude, huge firepower, and huge ammo load, that's where it shines in the BoB scenario.  Also, it's a fairly tough plane (in terms of being able to take damage from 303's).  I think it would still be a good plane there with less roll rate (although I would bet HTC has data to back up what it's current roll rate is in the game), and I don't think elevator authority would be much of an issue.  It also has great range, so it isn't restricted to 5-10 minutes of fighting, then you have to start worrying about how to exit the fight.

I don't know why it is good in a BoB scenario but wasn't considered that great in the real BoB.  It could be because in the BoB scenario, it is used completely differently (up high over the bombers with freedom to maneuver and employ the plane's strengths, not tethered lower right next to them in close escort).  If it were getting jumped by Spits or Hurris or getting into low-speed fights with them, it would be in trouble in the BoB scenario for sure.  But as a B&Z or energy fighter, it is excellent in that timeframe.

Hello Yeager,

You gotta go to the DA with Krupnski.  The man is an animal in the C model.  I think only one guy in the entire squad has beat him in it.  Brought me a whole new respect for the 110's.  I have not looked at them the same since.
