Freespace 2 - still playing it 10 years later
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:56:33 AM »
Amazingly it has aged well. Few games out there that after 10 years I still find myself drawn to. Granted its gone through a complete overhaul by the open source community that improved it beyond measure. Happy 10th.

Couple mods: The Babylon Project (Babylon 5):   http://babylon.hard-light.net/index.php

Didn't the release the entire game as a free download a couple years back?  I remember playing this back when it first came out when I was in college and it was a lot of fun.

It might've been. I had the original, so I just patched it to the SCP. But you can download the entire thing as a DVD already patched if one wishes.

Looks like it was, if I remember correctly the dev team declared the project abandoned and made it available. That game would be a great $10 bargain bin find, let alone free. :)

I think I'll go download it tonight, need something to do at work on Christmas Eve. :)

It's too bad people lost interest in the Space Combat Simulator genre in general. Between X-wing, Wing Commander and Freespace you have some of the best games of all time.

Ah, the days of screwing with bootdisks to get enough EMM memory for the game to run....

One time I got our computer stuck in a loop of trying to continuously start WarCraft II. I had its shortcut in Windows configured to automatically reboot the system into MS-DOS mode with modified autoexec.bat and config.sys files (this was Win95, I think. You could tell the system to reboot when launching an app and specify the settings to use in those files) to free up the necessary memory. On exiting the game, it was then supposed to reboot the system using the normal autoexec and config files.

Unfortunately, somehow the computer got stuck running the modified versions and kept starting the game instead...

Suffice to say, once I got it working again my mom wouldn't let me use the Windows launcher anymore....

I remember that BtRL's team divided up due to creative differences, and the team that branched off took with it the models and pieces that it owned. Now, there is BtRL and Diaspora. I'm pretty pumped of Diaspora thanks to the ever charismatic Karajorma. And then there is Fate of the Galaxy, a Star Wars mod of Freespace. That will be pretty boss as well.

Yanno. there were times when I had more fun messing with the config.sys and autoexec.bat and multiple boot configurations to get certain games to run then I had in playing the games themselves.
