At the very least, the rotary VTOL's? Looked like something grabbed from a Bell experiment in the 60s.

Funny how those VTOL look like a variation on the Marine Troop carrier VTOL from Aliens. Shades of Riddle Scot. The aliens in Avatar are more attractive though.

Actually, James Cameron did Aliens.  Ridley Scott did Alien.  Regardless, I noticed the similarities as well.

Alright...I see some definate RC possibilities just for modeling. Say you put a decent motor in one of those pods with a through shaft, and a planetary gear box for the opposite turning blade on the bottom - wonder if it could be a flyer

Just remember that you'd probably need to have some sort of computer to handle the articulation of the prop fans since they'll have a ton of impact on overall stability.  Plus, there'd probably be some sort of complex transmission required as a result of the fans articulating.  Remember we crashed about 4 or 5 Osprey's before we figured all that out.

Maybe if you used a rotor head on the pods, and mixed the fore/aft articulations?  I did something similar with a concept for a scale V-22 I am working on designing.. and it works quite well.  I did have to use gyros on all 3 axis to allow transition to and from forward flight without loosing control.. but it works.

Basically as I swivel into forward flight, my mix brings in aileron, rudder and elevator, maximizes rotor pitch,  and mixes out cyclic and collective. the reverse happens as I rotate the pods to vertical, the mix brings out the standard cntrl surfaces, and adds in cyclic, and collective.....

Definitely requires a high-end computer radio to function though.. wouldn't even want to consider it on a basic sport radio...
I use my 14MZ for this...

Hmmm, the beast looks like an unholy coupling of an Apache helo's bodywork and the USMC Osprey's propulsion units; velly intelesting.
