Birdstrike over ground zero night before xmas eve.
« on: December 24, 2009, 08:21:02 AM »
I was flying with a student last night down the Hudson River VFR corridor. I had taken the controls to show him something around ground zero - literally 5 seconds later a bird of some type hits the propeller and plows into the copilot windscreen. We landed at Teterboro NJ to a nice parade of Port Authority folks - the plane kinda looked like Patrick Bateman from American Psycho - blood on the tail, wind shield, antennas, wings. Audio starts around 9 minutes into the recording above.

Not sure if it's just me, but when I click on the audio link I don't hear anything.

Also, do you have air plane insurance that will pay for repairs?

Ouch! Glad you made it back to the ground without taking a bath.

As for the twin-engine... If the engines are propellers of some form (turbine or reciprocating) and you're forced to operate using only one engine, from what I understand you don't want to use much of any power from the remaining engine to prevent inducing a spin.

Late in the Summer the blackbirds start to flock in the corn.  I hit eighteen on one pass in August including three on the windshield.  I was virtual IMC and had to pull up out of the pass.  The loaders counted them as they disposed of the remains.  It's my personal best to date.

The Hudson River area's getting a bit of a reputation for bird strikes this year, eh? Glad you didn't have to ditch and swim.

A few years ago my dad and I hit a bird in a Bonanza.  It hit the spinner, went inbetween all 3 prop blades, and smacked into the cylinders.  OH GOD the stench was horrid.  A few years later dad had one go thru the right side of a Tomohawk windshield while he was with a Student.  He had a cut on his forehead, and I got to clean the inside of the plane out.  THere was bird parts, blood and gore all over the inside, all Speed dried to the interior.

 Glad ya'll got down safe.

Glad that worked out for you bro.  Didn't look like any serious damage--obviously good stuff getting down safe...   :joystick:
