Question re: Avast

Recently switched to Avast free home edition. Getting tired of the AVG bloat and nag-ware banners in the past few updates.

So I installed Avast, but only put on the shield, P2P, and mail protection. I didn't want it to slow me down by checking every webpage I go to so I unchecked that in the installation.


Okay, so it's up and running, has an icon in the tast tray....

But it seems to only detect things in memory?

Doesn't have an option to scan files or folders or drives, or anything?

Am I missing something here?

When you open the control panel for it, it should come up as a rectangle that looks like a media player.

Then I think you select the eject looking button at the top left, then from there you can click Start Scan....completely off memory so don't hold me to it!

right click on icon tray and select start avast and that will run a scan...

Odd thing is, it asked me for a registration key. Wtf??

I had none, had to click "demo" -- and it said 58 days left!


Again, wtf???

It's the free home edition, nothing anywhere said "DEMO" or "TRIAL" or "LIMITED" or any of that crap...

So it'll sit resident in my memory as long as I want, but I only get 60 days I can scan my drives? Bull puckey!

dood screw Avast, used it for awhile, it is mediocre at best (PITA), I have been using "Threatfire" for awhile now (at least a year) and no issues,
it is also free and does not use up crazy amount of recourse's,  I most often shut it down when I go into AH ( from the task bar), but there have been times I totally spaced it out, and left it on, no noticeable difference. (no I don't have an UBER system either)

take my advice, at least try it out, you wont be disappointed.

I actually recommended threatfire here along time ago and it's an outstanding program. Basically it adds a component sorely lacking in most (if not all) of the free version AVS. It's got a variable footprint and can cause a few issues at times but all in all is very good. Statistically the protection level between the best freeware and the best program is small (2% or less) and threatfire will eat into that a bit. All that being said even the best paid AV program is not a 100% thing so you need to have a plan. I use a combination of disk imaging and online storage for critical files so that if anything happens I can restore a disk image and then reload my critical data. Basically 20 min or so total to restore everything.

Then you should really take care of viruses. A friend of mine got infected with one that randomly picked a picture off his harddrive as attachment to his e-mails.

I'm sure your family/friends would be breaking with laughter if you inadvertedly sent an e-mail with your wifey posing nude
