Anisotropic Filtering..
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:04:28 PM »
Since the last major update, is AH2 supporting anisotropic filtering now?  There is no setting for it in game and I usually run about 4-8 notches(depending on the game)..
Even with everything turned up, game still looks Mickey Mouse..  All the textured decals on the plane look horrible from inside the cockpit..

Not sure about your system but I have seen micro-stutters with AF.

Any difference in detail though?

AF can actually make some things look bad when forced on.  We keep telling everyone to leave it at application controlled.  Not sure why folks do not listen.

No reason to insult us just to get help.  We help nice folks too.

No insult intended..  I thought it was my hardware....
All I want to know is how I can get the decals on the plane (D-Day stripes and such) to look better
from inside the cockpit..  Parts of the plane still look jagged..  Textures are at 1024, resolution at 1680x1050.  AA is at full(left at application controlled in control panel)..  Everything in the control panel is left at application controlled if AH requires it..  Otherwise, everything else is set to full..  I have a GTX260 and it has no problem running everything balls out..  I'm just wondering if there
is anything I can do to make it look better..  No insult intended..  Sorry for the Mickie Mouse content..  Meant to use it in context, didn't mean to say the game is Mickie Mouse..  The game is awesome!

I'm running a GTX260 also and have no issues with clarity of textures.  Did you download the hires texture package each time an update announcement said you should?

To actually run at 1024 textures you need the HiRes pack... otherwise even if you set it to 1024 you'll still be using 512 textures.
You can also try using different skins as some skinners are less.... talented than the rest.
In the end the game's graphics are still far from the best out there even though the recent update helped a lot.

Anodizer what utility are you using to set the properties for AH? Have you ever opened the Nvidia Control Panel and made changes to it?

"All I want to know is how I can get the decals on the plane (D-Day stripes and such) to look better" (Anodizer)

Question, does it look worse then this?

P-51D, Default Skin, Right Wing, no Zoom.

This is what my GTX 260 shows with everything maxed in-game.  Of course this has been scaled down from 1680x1050 due to Photobucket.  Just curious...my eyes aren't great but I would have to really look to see the jagged edges.

From his account it must look worse which makes me think either his profile for AH is set incorrectly or he has used one of the freeware utilities that really boogers up the settings.

Yes, high-res pack is installed and textures are set at 1024....  I'm pretty familiar with all the graphic options..  Been playing for 3+ years..  I only use the Nvidia Ntune to set graphics properties unless those settings are available in a game..
As far as AH is concerned, all options are set to max except for the shadows, which are at 512(with smoothing)..

And 1701E, my D-Day stripes never look that smooth....  Thought AF may have something to do with it..

On my machine anisotropic filtering does make a difference.  With it off (i.e. Application Controlled) I get pretty obvious texture artifacts at the edges of the roads on a base as seen from a tank (i.e. a texture that is at an oblique angle to the viewer).  With AF set to 8X these artifacts are pushed out to a farther distance (z axis) so that they are almost unnoticeable (at least I didn't notice them until I turned AF off then back on).  On my machine AF has no effect on microstutters (I get them with it on or off).  I don't think it has much effect on frame rate either, but I can't really tell (it's pegged at the refresh rate of 85Hz).

However, having AF off or on does not make the D-Day strips on the P51B or D look blocky.  They look sharp, like in 1701Es screenshot.  (The ones on the Spit XIV look bad, but I think that is intentional, i.e. to match hastily painted on strips.)  I doubt your problem is AF.

Anodizer it sounds like you may have updated a video driver without getting all of the old one off or files got crossed up somehow. I would remove the drivers and clean them off the system with something like DriverCleaner and reinstall the drivers.

Nope..  I always completely uninstall drivers and any left over vestiges before I upgrade to a new one using driver removal software as well as stuff like Ccleaner, Glary, etc..  I'm pretty thorough like that..  Gonna try re-installing the latest textures as well as driver, see if that works..
Everything on the inside of the plane(decals, lines and such) looks horrible..  D-day stripes look jagged, stuff like that..  I realize it has no bearing on playing..  But I like everything to be as "pretty" as possible for my own enjoyment...
