Spitfire Cockpit - Another Look :)
« on: November 16, 1999, 06:47:00 PM »
HTC;

The other thread got wasted on the "How To's" of posting screenshots.  I am starting this thread for my explanations.

All these ScreenPics were taking on the runway, just as this view is provided. All three cockpits are zoomed, so all of the cockpit instruments are visable.

First off, are they accurate, is this the views one is supposed to see?

I would like you to compare the various cockpit art.  I have provided the 109 art for comparison on the "Small box" plane type, and the P-51 for the "Optimum" plane comparison.

The Spit just has huge glass frames.  The side panels of the cockpit just look too big and clunky (put it on a 21" monitor).  You will notice that the Spit dash is the highest on the horizon.  There is just a sliver of runway visable on the side.

The Spit has with no doubt, much poorer frontal visability.  The 109 wins "Hands Down" on rearward visibility (not shown).  Real pictures I have seen, seem to indicate they should compare equally.  But, I have never sat in either plane.

I would think from these Pix that the Spit is by far the larger plane.

Spit

109

P-51

Please do not interpret my comments to imply, "The Spit Cockpit is Done Poorly".  IMO, I would just like to see it re-done.  I am certainly far from an expert.

Actually, the Spit screenshot would imply that there is less room between the pilot's head and the instrument panel than the other two planes.  Of course, I don't know how accurate this is... although I do know that, in particular, the 109 had a reputation for having an extremely crowded, small cockpit.

Armoured glass on the various planes. The Bf109 and Fw190 in AH don't have any. The Spitfire and N1K2 seem to be the only ones with it, although the N1K2 gunsight is partially inside the glass...

In AH I get the feeling the Bf109 had the roomiest cockpit. Look at how spread out the guages are compared to the other planes.

Is the P51D gunsight really that big? It looks huge compared to the other planes.

The P-51 gunsight is a custom.

The 109 wins on rearward visibility?

Excuse me?

Try looking straight back in the spit. Now lift your head straight up.

Now tell me the 109 has a better assward view...

Sorrow;

Sorry!  The 109 has a better assward view.  Couldn't resist

I did not check all the possible Spit vs 109 views.  I will indeed do that.

The Spit has a MUCH larger armor whatjamacallit behind the pilots head, the check six view is very obscured.....

Btw, this is a Spit thread

Hmm, I bet that the P-51D sight is late war K-14 which was lead computing gyro sight and thus needed bigger glass area to display the moving aiming reticle.

This is Spit six view

This is 109 six view

This is Spit six 45 degree up view

This is 109 six 45 degree up view

These views are the ones I personally use.  I did not want to reload AH to show defaults.

Mino, your six view sucks. Sorry.
this is the best one. Just look straight back, in the middle. Bump it forward a hair and go straight up. It's a full view of the entire back of the plane. Right over the armor plate.
The spit is the only plane you can do this in.

Of course, no real pilot could contort his head into a position like that; he would have to be looking down his nose, with his head plastered to the top of the canopy. And he would have to sit backwards to do it too.

Do you really want to argue semantics when your trying to find that 190 on your 6?

Yes I know that, but that IS the best view out the back of the spit. And the spit IS the only plane you can do that view in. I think it's a bug, the canopy slope is just far enough off you can slide your view over the top of the armor plate.

If this is fixed then the planes with the best 6 view will be the George and the Lada.

BTW any idea why they both have such a long canopy? Were they 2 seaters or something?

Sorrow;

Try as I might I could not replicate your rear view  on the Spit.

The only keys I know that work are Numpad and ArrowPad.

Numpad selects view, and Arrowpad modfies view.

I have moved  six view every which way but lose, using Arrowpad.  I cannot duplicate your view.
