Merge tactics - ONE SHOT ONE KILL

Friends,

I was discussing this topic with some friends the other night.

This topic focuses on a 1v1 dual not MA tactics.

On the merge one can pull for a first turn shot or maneuver for position for a secure offensive shot. There are some types of merges that allow you to get a good shot off first but it comes at a price of course. It is risky. But if you MAKE the shot it costs you nothing.

I would like to see FILMS of some ONE SHOT ONE KILL merges.

Post em if you got em.

Agent,
you beat me to the punch, anyway, I've got two one-shot one kill, two turn merges I can think of....

First merge
1) If the guy goes up, cut throttle and hard flat turn back into the guy.

Second merge
2) The other guy dives into you, reducing the vertical separation, once he dives in, do a reversal and boom take the shot. Most guys will not scrub the shot.


Second one...

First merge
1) Initially pull on a hard flat turn but once the other guy commits, relax on the stick and keep your e through the flat turn

Second merge
2) go straight up, the other guy will follow you and you'll rope him. All is needed is a nice sexy hammer head at the top and boom you got him.

Grizz, did you film our fight on Saturday night where I did the 'second one' on you? I don't have the film :(

Forgive me if I missed the mental picture. But what exactly is your opponent doing to provide you with enough of an E advantage to successfully rope him in this instance? A film would definitely help illustrate this. In my experience - flat turns don't usually allow for E retention unless you're pulling more of a pitch-back. Not doubting you, just wondering if you could elaborate.

the key is that when you 'initially pull on a hard flat turn', you are baiting the other guy to also go into a tight flat turn, if he does not do this, then this merge will not work as intended. Now, the game is that he sees you go into what appears at first to be a tight flatturn, which causes him to also go into a tight flat turn causing him to have tunnel vision. At which point you relax your pressure on the stick(and thus your now doing a low-g turn), thus when you merge again, hes going between 100 - 200 mph and your going over 300 mph.

I think he's looking for films, not descriptions of multiple merges.

There is no such thing as a sure "one shot"merge since it's dependent to a degree on the other person. From my perspective you actually have two subsets tactically. Those attempts that rely on a a "one timer" during the initial crossing of paths. As a general rule this is the trade off for allowing the other guy the more aggressive lead turn. In effect your very slightly late on your merge looking for a shot as he crosses your path. The 2nd is flying for a snapshot on the re-merge. Creton is/was exeptionally good at this and so is/was DMF/Leviathon. Both could achieve an ungodly kill % on the "2nd merge"....without being at all rude your two "one shot" merges will get you killed 98% of the time ardy vs anyone with reasonable skill. The two keys to a merge are displacement and relative speed. As a general rule no maneuver in a single plane of motion will generate a "one shot kill". A "flat turn" will generate a counter and so will a pure zoom. Now the combination of the two is a pretty standard dueling merge. You can go in hot and pull a flat turn slightly early, potentially enticing even a good pilot into going vertical. You convert your flat turn into a climb after less then 90 decgrees and can still have the E to catch him for a shot as he climbs even though your slightly neg E to him.

The flip side it to dive hard into the merge late but throttled back and cross controlled so that your speed is actually slow (225-240) and then pull up early, if the con follows you can fly a vertical rolling scissor and force an overshoot. If he reads an E opener and goes to fly under you can pull thru in a loop and get a reasonable snapshot. No single "move" will consistently generate a shot on the merge vs a good opponent.

This is true.

However, there are times when you do get a perfect merge with a kill shot on the first turn or second turn. The guy makes a mistake or you just get lucky.

These are the merges to study in detail.

Not really what you'd call a 'merge' but closest I have to a 1 shot kill.  I had just finished a long fight and was rtb low.  I see a 109 with alt behind me closing.
