Avatar Help
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:15:27 AM »
I wanted a transparent backgound on my new avatar but can't find anything anywhere on this site that tells me what the RGB scale needs to be to make the background transparent.

Obviously it's possible since so many have done it.  Help.

Not sure about the avatar (maybe no different than the signature).  I saved mine as a gif with a transparent (no color at all) background.

The in-game transparency color doesn't have anything to do with the bbs avatars.

This is correct.

Saving it with a transparent background didn't work.  It turned into a white background.

I also tried using the grey nose art background.  That just came out grey.  I've even tried saving other peoples avatars with transparencies to check the rgb scale.  Some are black, some are grey, none have worked for me.

Take a screenshot of the AH BBS. Paste it into a program such as paint. Take the eye dropper tool, and suck up the color from the desired location of transparency. Then paste that color onto the back of your desired avatar. Give it a try, maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

What program are you using?  Did you select all the white background and "clear" it away so it's truly gone?  Not sure about animated GIF files and transparency.

The GIF standard supports a special transparent channel called an alpha channel. So it's not a matter of choosing an RGB-value as the "transparent colour". Instead you select which pixels belongs to the alpha channel.
Microsoft Paint does not support GIF with alpha channel. Photoshop (which I use) does. You can probably google for some freeware alternatives.

Thanks Badboy.  That worked.  What did you do?

I'm using Paintshop Pro 7 (similar to Photoshop) and Animation Shop 3.  For some reason it keeps turning my transparent background to white when I put the images into Animation Shop.

I actually just tried it again myself and the transparent background changes to white when I save it as a gif.
